Starman Bros. Auction, June 25 & 26, at Classic Air of Western NY, Cowlesville, NY

Many Aeronca airframes, engines and parts. Plus Cubs, Pipers, Stinson, Maule and homebuilt projects.

Wish I was closer, would love to go here.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen the earlier post in the other area.
Wish I could go to another auction like this again and try to stock up on spares.

Anyone hear any of the results of the auction in New York.. Individuals or did some big outfit buy it all up?

I spoke to a guy on the phone who attended the auction. He had purchased some stuff from the family before the auction as well. He said the J3 projects sold at a premium for their condition. The C-85 cores went for $4500 to $5K and the overhauled lycs went pretty cheaply in comparison. His impression was there were not too many bargains.

That's similar to a Starman auction we had locally a few years ago. A friend of mine passed, leaving four flying aircraft: T-6, Beech 18, Stearman, Travelair, plus 4 or 5 "complete" Stearman projects, a bunch of Beech 18 and Stearman parts, plus tools and a huge amount of other stuff. Everything sold at what I considered a premium to what you could have paid for the same stuff off of Barnstormers.

I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday and he's headed out to apparently pick up one of the J-3's to haul back to the Dakotas. My understanding is they bought a bunch of stuff that could be shipped but wanted the J-3 trailered back.

I hope this premium auction thing keeps going. I am probably out of the auction buying business but I hope my estate sale will bring premium prices when the time comes. The youngest of the 4 airplanes/projects in my hangar is my flying 1947 Bonanza.

Would hate to see this happen to the wonderful airplanes in your hangar!

We do have a private trust already but no one in the family will want my airplane stuff when I am gone. I have some hope on a couple of my grandkids so it depends on when I check out to determine if I have enough time to get them to be "airplane people".

I"m not sure if this auction was at the residence-airstrip of Gordon Fisher, near East Aurora, N.Y. IF it was, this was some operation! Nice place, everything in its place, clean, stored nicely, etc. I visited about 4-5 years ago. At that time he was rebuilding Cubs but had ALOT of wings, gear, a Husky, PA-11, and on and on. VERY nice people and he was an excellent restorer. Was this the auction site? JP

It was. I don't remember if Gordon was the son or the father, I believe the father. The son passed from a brain tumor. I'm still trying to process the whole event, the auction that is. So many Aeronca parts I'm afraid will be tossed as they were mixed in with boxes bought in some cases for a single Piper part. Two others were searching for Aeronca componants with a few others looking for a piece here or there. I left with all I could carry and even made sure Larry Huntley left with a truck full of tail feathers no one else could carry.

Sorry to hear about the son. The father was Gordon. I remember it as a great visit, they had very nice homes and a first class 3000 foot grass strip. A private pilots dream set up! Gordon did first class restoring. He had one of the very first, if not the first cub ever built at one time. Piper traded him a brand new super cub for it which he flew often. Thanks for the info! JP
