Aeronca prop decals
Is there someone on the list that makes the " Sensenich made for Aeronca" decals. I believe they were water slide type.
JoeA needs about a dozen of them ( he doesn't know yet) for a prop project he has.

Re: Aeronca prop decals
From an old Joe Dickey newsletter...1988
Dick Love
POB 448

Prop decals 7 color water transfers of Aeronca/Sensenich logo made from
orginial decal obtained from Sensenich. In 1988 it was $30. I think
RC modelers make decals now from transfer material and I took a photo
from Ray's Chief at Oshkosh this year.

Thanks Mark,
The guys at the prop shop asked today about the decals for Joe's props. I'll see which direction he wants to go.

Bob Carr had some made when he was providing spinners. Maybe contact him to see where they were made.

Re: Aeronca prop decals
Good info everyone! Thanks!
BTW, I took 5 props over to a museum that Paul works at part time and they are evidently doing an excellent job of overhauling and restoring them.
Three of the props are for Gareth Gilson, who also has a Sedan. One of them is the original Sensenich prop that came on the airplane when his Grandfather picked it up in 1948 at the factory.
Also Paul, one of the props is not for a Sedan, but believe its for a Cub or other four cylinder engine. I got it in a trade and the canvas needed work so believe that it should have a standard Sensenich decal on it. That is unless we find out that it will go on a Chief or Champ.
Thanks again!

Re: Aeronca prop decals
As per the above post, I think I'd contact Bob Carr, maybe follow up to see if Dick Love still is there at the address. If not, I'd be temped to take the photo, photoshop it a bit better (there is a perspective issue with the Sensenich logo as it curves away from the focal plane). Then start checking the plastic model
forums and see what they do to produce a water based decal, which you would put on the plane before the spar varnish coats. Just my idea...

Re: Aeronca prop decals
Joe,
They surfaced the prop flange area on one and are in process of changing out some of the broken screws on the tipping. Herb seems to think all of the props will be airworthy. They will need the decals when they start to varnish, also the tip paint color needs to be decided on. One I saw had red tips and the others were SUG.

Re: Aeronca prop decals
Paul,
Thanks much! Great news that all should be airworthy!
Sorry to say I simply could not get enough time to get out of the simulator or classroom and give him a ring today.
Is there anyway that he can do all that is possible up to putting the decals on and hold at that point for a bit?
I should be finished by Monday and on the way home on Tuesday, so could call him then. The last month to six weeks has been crazy and it should slow down in the next 10 days when the airplane is delivered and online.
Thanks,
Joe
PS, What is SUG?

Re: Aeronca prop decals
Joe,
I can let them know and see if they can hold up on the last few coats of varnish. The paint shop is full of airframe parts so they might be a little slower than normal.
The tip paint I spoke of, the SUG, stands for Sensenich Ugly Green.

Re: Aeronca prop decals
On the fAA email archives I have a post that had the MIL spec color number for that green, which is something that dates from WWII. I had a little chip come off and I was trying to match it. Finally went to the hobby store and got some bottles of enamel and mixed it up to sort of match a little.
I looked up the old 2002 post, here it is- since the post they have gone back to spar varnish for the coatings I believe.
"The color for the olive drab green tipping came out of World War II
color specs. Sesenich
developed it for the Army according to guidelines and now gets the color
from a supplier. It is Federal Standard Color 595A33440 and is a
'yellow-tan olive drab' type color. It is an enamel finish. There are
no touch-up kits available for the wood props.
The final finish is a spray of Sherman-Williams Polane B POLYURETHANE
ENAMEL,
which you usually can't get at Sherman-Williams unless there are a
lot of cabinet makers in your area. Sometimes there is one
Sherman-Williams
store that specializes in auto and clear coats. You can also use
Sherman-Williams HS (high solids) clear poly on the prop to
touch up too ....the varnish was developed for Boeing Aircraft in 1943
and it is a two part process that required forced air mask spaying.
And it's expensive stuff. In 2006, a quart was $25 with a $43
catalyist, plus reducer.
Obviously, just touching up a prop is going to be problematic.
There is nothing compatable in the Sherman Williams line that is easier or
safer. So it's easier to send the prop off to a refinisher than do
it yourself.
Also, the usual order is 5 gallons of the stuff! Other than propellers, it
doesn't have too many people using it, according to the manager at the
Sherman Williams store I talked with.
Now, what is the color formula for 595A33440 for the tipping? Are there
any plastic scale modelers or people who work in the Federal Standards
office who can give us a clue on the formula for that color.... I tried to
use olive drab, lemon yellow and tan together and got close, but no cigar."

Re: Aeronca prop decals
I talked with Bob Carr today, Dick Love was having the decals made. Bob thinks Dick sold the last remaining decals to Sensinech!
Re: Aeronca prop decals
Called Sensinech they have a few sets in stock, $25.00 a set!
