Mc Dowell starter

Post by boris48 »

What parts are different from a taper shaft 65 hp to a 85 flange McDowell starter. Can you make up the different pieces? I see stephan has one for sale and wondering if it is possible to adapt it to a 85 hp..Mine is on floats and I would like a starter and not add the 25-30 lbs of an electric system

Boris,
The items you will need are a ratchet wheel, they differ between the flange and taper shafts. And the forward pulley brackets are different between the A series and the C series engines.

Aeronca dwg; 4-681 Tapered Shaft Install, 4-711 Flange Shaft Install.

McDowell dwgs; 26-9346-1 Bracket Installation, 26-22147 Cable Installation, 26-22547 Baffle Alteration, 26-22447 Nose Bowl Alteration, SA-15 Starter Bracket (S-14B)

The tapered shaft gear is not as deep as the flange shaft, pictures show difference!

Boris,
Sorry I missed your call, I'll try you this afternoon.
The easier way is to tell you what will work. The starter assembly and the rear pulley bracket are the items that will be the same when you change from an A65 taper shaft to a C85 flange shaft. The needed parts are tough to find. Not because they're rare but because nobody knows how to identify them.
