COST OF PAINT JOB FOR A CHAMP

Im about ready to paint my restored 7EC my self in a star burst design using either Ranthane or Aerothane and got to wondering about farming it out .

Any one have any cost figures for the labor cost or total cost of shooting this kind of paint scheme ?

A rough guess would be about $8-10 thousand at a good aviation paint shop. I base this on a C172 were looking at getting painted. Base coat with 3 stripes cost about $8000, but that includes stripping the old paint. If you go to someone like "Air-Mod" in Cinncinattii, it will run about $12,000. You can work a deal with the paint shop sometimes, doing all the grunt work and help with masking and prepping, and a better price.

Whatever you do, think long and hard about getting a Car painter to do it. They're not use to using aircraft paint, which is super thin compared to auto paint that has lots of filler in it. They will run it, guaranteed!! Plus, they will want to spray it and get it out of the shop the next day. Aerothane and Ranthane both take 7 days @ 70 degrees and 50% humidity to fully cross-link. Even after that, they are still soft and fragile.

If you're using Aerothane, use white first, then the main colour, or it will never cover. Learned that the hard way.

one other thing...

Randolph was bought by Poly-Fiber over the summer. Chemically Ranthane is better, and shoots better out of the gun. Currently, Poly-Fiber is re-tooling so that the Aerothane will be the same, chemically, as Ranthane. So it really won't make a difference which brand you pick, unless one has a really nice color Pink you like....
