Do I need deferent cases???

Post by David Nielsen »

Today I tried to order crankshaft bearing from Aircraft Specalties. I talked to Chad, who asked what kind of thrust washers I needed. That was new one on me. Chad e-mailed me a chart to identify my cases. There is one case that will not accept thrust washers. It uses a one piece front main bearing. That appears to be the cases I have. They do not make a front main bearing .020 under for this case. Meaning my freshly ground crankshaft will not go into the cases I have. What a bummer. Is there anything I can do other then find some proper cases? i'M TO THE PLACE WERE i'M GETTING REALY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT THIS PROJECT. Can anyone advise me?

Dave,

I beleive the 0200 cases require the one piece front main bearing. Look at your cases, if there is a small (about 3/16") dowel afixed to the groove where a thrust bearing would go, i believe you would have a standard type case. What engine do you have?

Dave,
The current engine in my L16 also uses a 1 piece front main. I would say you're going to change the case or find a +.010 crank. You might check and see if they can modify your case. I've never seen it done but stranger things can happen. I'm assuming this is a C85 engine.

Dave, you did not mention which engine you have. When I restored my plane, the C 85-12 engine had a one piece front main bearing. Like everything else in the engine it was broke. Bill Pancake rebuilt my engine with a new O-200 crank in the C85 case, which had been sent off for inspection. I tried to order the bearings prior to rebuilding the engine but Bill insisted that I wait until he had a chance to see the case. When we did replace the front main bearing, Bill used two separate thrust washers and a two piece journal bearing. Paul already mentioned the issue of the dowel. I don't recall the details because I was just watching Bill work, but as I recall there are different thrust washers depending upon the case and the dowel. I would suggest that you take some photos of the bearing journal area of the case and then give Bill Pancake a phone call and email the pictures to him and he can most likely lead you in the right direction.

You guys are great. I'll call Divco. Then see if I can get ahold of Bill Pancake. Sorry I'm getting old and forgetful, it's an A-65

You can modify your case to fit the .020 bearing/thrust washer combo. You can have DIVCO or AJAX or most engine shops that deal with case work do it, I think the shipping cost more then the actual machining costs. If you're a decent machinist or know one you can also do it yourself, all you're doing is making a notch in the case to accept the thrust washer.

Dave,
Keep us posted on this. In the past I've had C85 cases modified for the O200 thrust washers but haven't tried it on an A65. As far as I know all of the A65's had a 1 piece front main. I never have tried to modify a 1 piece front main to a 3 piece.

Paul,
I talked to DivCo this AM. They gave me the following info: Yes the cases can be machined to accept the multi piece front main bearing. They quoted a price of $100 dollars and a one day turn around, The proper bearing is an A-4 setup. This is what they said to me and of course is for the A-65. I have a freind who owned a machine shop and still plays with doing small jobs,,. I have an e-mail sent to him to talk about this Mod.

Thanks for your input guys

I know your friend may be the best machinist on earth but if this engine is going into an aircraft with a standard airworthiness certificate I would have a yellow tag on that case when it gets back.....

Just a small suggestion.

Dave,
I did some looking this morning and it looks like the O200 thrust won't work. The castings are a little different and it looks too narrow to fit the washer. The C85 looks like it will fit. I don't know what the A-4 set up is but there are a few different thrust washer set ups for the C85. Good luck on this mod, once you get it all worked out it should give you great service.
