Hey folks,

I have an A75 with Stromberg carb. I'm trying to take it off to have it cleaned, and I've got it mostly done, but I can't get that last nut holding it to the manifold, the one closest to the pilot, and the oil tank, and the mixture area. There's no way to get a wrench or socket on it. I've tried tapping on the flats with a screwdriver and hammer. No luck. How do you get this last nut off?

EDIT: Jack got it off! He used the screwdriver and tap method. I guess he had a better screwdriver.

Those little squeezed-between-flange nuts can be a headache, but keep on trying. I heated and bent an open end wrench into an "L", and made a wrench that would work, but still, it sure isn't easy. Putting it back on is nearly as hard as taking it off. At least it is not something you commonly have to remove.

Phil, pull the intake tubes off. Drop the intake spider off the engine with the carb attached. Nuts pretty easy to get to on the bench. David J.

Thanks for the help guys. It's off now and in the cleaning tank. Now the trick will be getting it back on. I'd thought about trying to modify an open end wrench and may do that. Hadn't thought to heat and bend though, so thanks.

I buy the cheapest set of wrenches, about $10 for a set, just to have wrenches I can heat, bend, grind or just throw at someone. I can't bring myself to put a torch to a snapon wrench.

Leave the mixture plate or mechanism off till you got the nut on, gives you more room.

Yeah, I was thinking about leaving the mixture mechanism off to re-install, and putting it on after. My A&P is going to supervise the reinstall, so I'll ask him about that, but it makes sense to me.

Guys, all you have to do is pull the intake rubber bushings back and 2 nuts will drop the intake housing off the engine case with the carb attached. You can then put the hard to reach nuts on with the whole thing on the workbench. Try it, it makes a nearly impossible job easy. David J.

Now you tell me! We got it back on. May have to take it back off though, as it's running rough between 1950 and 2150 rpm.

Guys, we even leave the air box attached. Deal with the whole thing on the bench. You can roll it around and get good access. David J.

I just went through that last week. I took a cheapo 7/16" open end wrench, cut it in half so it would have a short throw and working room. Then ground a lot of the material off the side of the wrench so it would fit easier. Worked fine (relatively speaking) and didn't have to dissasemble anything else.

Well, mine is back on, and with any luck, will not have to come off again while I have her!
