Deregistered Aircraft

Post by kyleb »

Has anyone re-registered a deregistered aircraft? I'm looking for a how-to if there is such a thing.

I'm looking at a project that was deregistered a few years ago following a fatal accident. I can get the remnants, logbooks, etc. for a decent price, and I think the trail of ownership is straightforward.

If I decide to buy and rebuild it, I would like to register it under its origina n-number, serial, etc. Is that doable, or am I stuck "Assembling an aircraft from Spare Parts?" and registering it that way?

Hello Aviator
Okay you can do what you want to do, but some steps you take can lead you to experimental, and you don't want that, at least I wouldn't. Do you have the Airworthyness certificate, registration, data plate, weight and balance and logs for the airframe and engine? Pull the FAA data records, if you can get them your aircraft is still in the system. If you have all I have mentioned,in hand, make an appointment with the local FISDO: they will give you a form to reinstate your registration. You simply write a letter that the aircraft was in storage, and a letter from the previous owner stating the aircraft was in storage. Have these in hand when you visit the FISDO The Insurance companies if the plane was totaled deregistred it. They do that when the damage dictates a certain condition. Many times with our small aircraft they will do it because they just don't know, plane and simple. Re- claiming your N-Number I crossed that bridge last year. First of all you have to locate it. is it in the system. N-numbers recycle, usually to manufacturers, They will have a block of several, If your N-number has not been used, It's very simple to get it back, how ever the current owner must agree to release it to you, My N-Number was at AirTractor, and used as an Ex-port number, The Number went overseas, and when it was released AirTractor wrote a letter to the FAA and released thr number I paid 10.00 USD and dept 750 in OKC reissued the number thru the FISDO, (Thats important) The FISDO needs to know its pending, I can go on and on But thats a start!!! I know of at least one that was deregistered and reinstated (certified) so it is possible.
Like Sunny says, get as much data together as possible before going through the process.

Kyle,
I'm working on one right now. Since they released this new AIR 200 stuff it really has got the registration people in a whirl. It's got a lot tougher, but can still be done. They just want a lot more information submitted.

Been off the site for a few years, and the 3 year re register program is finally starting to smooth out. Not to say issues still surface. All of us need to go to FAA . Gov from time to time, and just check your airplanes status. I was surprised when my Stinson L-5 was listed as a twin engine. How that happened is an issue that needs to be corrected, and a letter did the trick. I,strongly urge all members, to re register as soon as you get the pending notification letter. Your date remains the same, but it allows you to act if a problem surfaces. And they do from time to time. Example! Had a customer, 7AC. Purchased the aircraft, and requested a prebuy after the fact, meaning he already bought it. Current airworthiness, and was flying on the pink slip. He gets a letter from OKC, the plane was de registered and totaled by avemnico, insurance. The previous owner turned in the old registration certificate by law but marked the wrong block. How the insurance company got involved I will never know that one, but they concurred, with the fact the plane was totaled in an accident that I believed never occurred. 6 months later and a fis do visit, placed everything back on track. Along with another re register which placed him back into the system. I check maybe twice a year. By N-number. One time my Champ had a lycoming engine. Not really, but that's what the record said. Also one other item, A letter goes a lonnnnnng way, much better than a phone call, seems to get thinks done. A fellow aviator Sunny

My Sedan was deregistered when I bought it. It took about 4 months to get the original registered N number back. A lot of that was my ignorance of the system, but it did slow me down in getting started to work on the project. I have just reregistered it a few months ago before I had ever even flown it. I am looking to start the same process over again on a WWII glider that is in our area. that will be harder because it was registered to a club which is no longer incorporated.
