Fishing Rod Tubes

Maybe there is already something on the Forum about this, but I havent seen it yet. Has anyone got an easy plan for installing a fishing rod tube in the Sedan?

Have seen several Sedans and a few Champs with this. Most used a piece of PVC pipe or the like that extended into the tailcone. No idea on approval though....

Thats pretty much what I had in mind. Since I will be recovering the fueselage this winter, It s a good time to do it. I was hoping somebody had a copy of a 337 that had been approved for this. Sounds Like I will get practiced at FAA paperwork drills over the next few months.

I haven't seen any 337's for that but I'll keep my eyes open. In a lot of cases when you ask the owner about that sort of a mod on a plane you're more apt to get a wink than a copy of the 337

When you start looking for some field approvals I'd reccomend you talk to Mark Smith at the FSDO. He helped me with a few and is a straight forward no nonsense kind of guy who ran his own shop for a long time before he worked for the FAA...Louis

Also assume that you guys know Dave Swartz who is also with the FAA up there in Alaska? He is a Sedan owner and might be able to assist.

I dont know Dave, but I do know Mark. I will keep an eye out for him. Havent seen him in quite awhile. Is Dave in Fairbanks or Anchorage?

It would have definitely fit a set a skis. I don't have much on this besides the picture...there was no documentation as this was added when the plane spent 20 years up in the Canadian bush country.

Came up with a cheap idea for a Fishing Rod Tube. PVC downspout pipe. its very light and costs about $10 for ten foot long section. I epoxied a plywood plug into the back end of it and drilled a .25 inch drain hole about an inch from the back end. I put screws into the plywood plug and epoxied them in as well, then used a piece of stringer to reinforce each of the crosspieces of the bulkheads behind the baggage compartment. The drainspout was cut to 5 and a half feet. it could interfere with cables if left longer than that. I epoxied it at each of the reinforcements and again at the front after adding screws to position it even with the rear of the baggage compartment. It is not large enough for skis, alas, love to ski. But it should hold at least 3 long rods.

I ended up buying a new 5 piece fly rod. Technology these days allow multiple pieces without losing the action and it is a lot easier then installing a tube.
