Top Windshield mounting and gap?

Post by AV8ERZ »

Hi Guys!
hope you are all having a great day?
So I was fitting the existing windshield into position, and I find it interesting how it attaches at the TOP in front the top cabin former (5-171) In my case there is a 1" X 1" square piece of wood that is covered in interior material that is screwed to cabin member (5-171) See Figure 2-2 and atop that piece of wood is where the windshield lays and is screwed into See figure 1-1 NOW when we took the windshield out, there was an additional piece of fabric glued along the top of the windshield and trailing a few inches on the top of the cabin aft member (5-171) and on top of that is a strip of aluminum the screws go into. NOTE in figure 1-1, #1 the strip of aluminum is removed for photo viewing and screws were added. Same figure 1-1 shows #2 Gap, that is were the fabric was added and glued to the top of the windshield and the strip of aluminum was added atop the fabric and screwed in place. Is this the correct way to attach the windshield at the top? I appreciate all the help for all of you, Please bare with me with my descriptions!

If additional photos are required I can do that ;)

Thanks again so much,

Michael

Let's just say that isn't stock. There is an Aeronca 11 series drawing for the strip of AL that attaches the windshield to the former at the top of the cabin. This looks like a jury rigged thing. The rumor about the Vne speed is that windshield was the first to fail, so pay attention to that top attach. It's an easy thing to make with a break.
There can be a small gap there, but it's all attached well with a metal cover, so no big deal.

Thanks skyking3286,
As posted originally, this whole aircraft has had shotty workmanship, non aircraft hardware, you name it, it had it or lacked it! Where can I obtain the drawing of the strip of Aluminum that attaches the windshield to the former at atop the cabin or any drawings or photos? I have a good chunk of material on the Chief models, photos, illustrations etc but nothing pertaining to certain issues I am facing or at least nothing in great detail? I am aware of the failure point on the windshield and this is why I am so adamant about doing this correctly, regardless of the age of this aircraft, I want this to be legal as my IA is very particular and who could blame him in today's sue-happy society.
If anybody can take a few photos of their top windshield installation, I would sure appreciate it ;)

Again THANKS Everybody,

Mic.

Here's my Chief, with a non-standard skylight. But the windshield is right.

And you can certainly add the windshield after the paint...which actually makes much more sense. Mine was painted first, as per the video grab above.

And likewise, drawing 2-1001 Support Windshield Top. I believe I used 8/32 bolts into stop nuts to secure it.
Drawing 1-2800 has the original windshield bottom nuts.

The nuts for the bottom strip of the Windshield are something that I couldn't find. I did find some post nuts that were pretty close. The
post keeps the windshield in place while allowing a little movement for temperature without over tightening.
