Small tail Scout

Can anyone tell me if there is an STC or approved 337 to put a C85-12 on a Scout. It is a model 11AC-S, has a small tail and no aux fuel tank. I've looked at the Wagner and Lasher STCs and can't find anything workable. Thanks for any ideas.

Check with Bill Pancake. There might be a Service Letter that allows the conversion. That is was was used to convert my 7AC to a 7CCM. If it is like that one for, it did require the modification of the tail to the larger tail and two strengtheners in the cockpit under the panel area. The Lascher STC did not require the tail modification, but again that was for a Champ. - Best Bob

Service letter 14 describes the conversion. -8 engine, larger tail and I did not read about the fuel system. I would think that you could probably use one of Don's dream machines STC's to convert the -12 to an -8 but not real sure about that one. I believe that is for the 11ac, not sure about the Scout though.

As Bob mentioned, call Bill Pancake on 304 788 1974. Bill is working with the FAA on the final details of an STC to do exactly what you are asking about (ie install 85-12 on Chiefs, similar to Lasher's STC for installing 85-12 on Champ). Bill can give you the details of what is involved and the ETA for completion. I believe that with this new STC, a larger tail would be optional, but not required.

We used the Don's Dream Machine STC to put the stroked C-85-12 in my Chief. You can reach Don Swords at 770-412-8885 in Atlanta. Great engines. He does -8 and -12s.

There is a guy on Barnstormers, selling a Bolt On Rudder Extendor to turn the tail into a large fin.
