Suction Cup Sunshades

Post by Matt »

We plan to do a bit of island hopping in Croatia, eastern Europe, soon. If the weather cooperates, as we hope it will, sunshades would certainly make the flying more enjoyable, especially behind the huge windshield of an Aeronca Sedan. 8)

Has anyone here have previous experience, using sunshades that are held in place with suction cups? Something like this: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/ros-9000100.html I worry that the suction cups might leave behind circular silicone traces on the windshield, after they are removed. Just like my Garmin mount does on the car windshield. The long-term idea is to install Rosen sun visors, but for now, something simple, cheap and quick has to do – but without hurting the plane!

Would appreciate to hear your thoughts. Thanks,

Matt

We use something similar in the demo Cubs. They leave a slight ring but it can be wiped off with a soft rag.

I carry one of these in my flight kit, and they come in handy with bubble canopy's. Because they are cling style, they leave no residue. I found them at a WalMart or Target for about $12.

I found a set of Rosen Visors on ebay and bought them for my sedan. After calling the Rosen company I discovered that they carry two basiclly universal models. One which mounts on a flat surface and one that mounts around a tube. The set I got were made for a Luscombe and they are the flat mounts. I mounted the pins on my header bulkhead. I think the tube mounts would have been a little more versatile. I am used to using them in Cessnas. I think you will be happy when you get some. They are very expensive though. They have gone upto over $400 from the factory. I paid $270 for mine. Hope to be able to try them out before next winter.

Matt,

Am building mounts for Rosen's right now for the Sedan. We bought a new jet last year and one of the Rosen's in the jet had an issue with the mounting screw, so they replaced them for free... and I got the old ones for free! Once I get some mounts built they will go in the Sedan! :)

Thanks everybody for your inputs!

In the meantime, I have also talked to Rosen. They say that they have not heard of problems with the suction cups leaving marks, but that the crew sunshades are meant for the rear or side windows rather than the windshield. I guess, because the pilot's vision would be impaired. But in my case I would mount them far up, just to get a bit more shade on sunny days, rather than protection from a low standing sun. The static film type sounds interesting and would maintain clear vision.

The Sedan's diagonal brace tubes measure 1" in diameter. Rosen's Maule sun visors come with 3/4" clamps, but a 1" version is available, too. I just sat in the plane and tried to imagine where this would all be mounted. If the copilot side visor is stowed back and up, the fuel gauge on that side might be hidden from the pilot's view. The visor is transparent all right, but considering the angle at which the pilot looks at it, reflections could be an issue. I will test this out with a piece of acrylic plastic. Another point: Originally, I had figured the bigger the better, meaning the larger the visor shields the better. But after sitting in the plane, I think the smaller version (approx. 8" of height) should be just fine and can probably be stowed away and out of sight better.

I look forward to hear about Joe's experiences with his installation. I wish my butler's Global Express needed new sunvisors, too, so I could inherit the old ones....
