Wing Hardware???

Post by pmanton »

According to the print, the bolts that hold the compression strut at the strut attach points is an AN76-16 the same type bolt called out for propeller installation. It seems to be made of unobtainium.
An AN6-H16A should be a substitute however I can’t find any of those either.
What have you all been using?
Thanks

Paul,
Just make sure you don't shank the bolt and the AN6 will work. Some have drilled the heads themselves.

OK I'm stumped. I've never before heard the expression shank the bolt. Would you be so kind to elaborate and add to my continued education? :)

Richard,
The AN76 bolts have an extended threaded portion longer than the AN6. This allows the threads to be fully engaged on the length of threads with the prop drive lugs. If you use an AN bolt with the shorter thread length, the bolt could run out of threads prior to tightening, and tighten on the bolt shank. If you use a shorter AN bolt the thread engagement in the drive lugs will be insufficient.
The compression strut uses the longer thread but for different reasons. Since the strut is in compression the thread engagement is not as critical.

Paul,

Thanks I understand your point and had never heard the expression before. I would have incorrectly described it as bottoming out when if fact it had run out of thread. Thanks for continuing my education.

Todd Trainor's Aeronca History Museum just listed some NOS bolts you were asking about. I bought enough for several wings.

Bringing this back from the dead for those that are wondering.
The an76 bolts have been superceeded by an MS number.

The replacement for the AN76-16 is now an MS20073-06-16

Hope this helps
