how to start A65

Post by KCOI7 »

I am curious what words of wisdom canbe found here related to starting techniques for the A65-8 engine. Mine has a primer.

So when my champ had the A65 in it, my procedure to start it was the following. ( I know each engine has its own likes and dislikes.) Mine had the old Eisman mags without impulse coupling. Throttle cracked, Prime 3 times,(confirm the mags are OFF) Pull the prop thru around 8 times, (confirm throttle cracked) Mags ON, swing the prop. Normally it would start 1st or 2nd blade.
With my C85-8, it has dual impulse coupling slick mags, 2 shots of prime, Crack throttle, (confirm mags OFF) pull the prop thru 8 times, (confirm throttle cracked, Mags ON) Swing prop, usually starts 1st blade.

I am also a fan of Heavy Prime, mags off and swing the prop about 6 blades, then reprime depending on weather conditions, mags on and usually starts in 1-2 blades. When hot I flood it, then give it 12 blades with the mags off and then mags on, no prime and starts on 1-2 blades. All with about 1/2" throttle open.

Pull it through about 8 blades until you hear a sucking sound from the carburetor. Throttle to idle and prop it. If it kicks back prime it some more, if it fails to do anything it's too rich and needs to be cleared. Not a big fan of cracking the throttle, I adjust mine to start at idle RPM with the throttle closed. Make sure it's tied down.

One of the reasons that I love my Flip Up Seaplane Door so much is that I can hand prop from behind and at the same time have access to the mags and throttle just by reaching over. Over the last 10 or so years dozens have asked for a copy of my 337 on this as it is a very easy conversion. Makes it much safer to hand prop and less need for securing the tail, which in the past rather than doing that, I would put a wooden SMALL choke under the right side wheel with a wire on it. Once started, it is enough to hold the plane at low power settings and easy enough to taxi over and pull into the cockpit.

I think I got an E-mail from you. Will be happy to send you a copy of the 337 as well as some pictures of the conversion. If one of the administrators would E-mail me at rkittine@aol.com I will be happy to send it to them also so they can be posted. I have had issues putting up pictures here.
