National Aeronca Association Bulletin Board

Just in the middle of the annual on my plane and opening up the cowling. Saw something that did not look normal on the engine.

Looking from the right side of the plane, down at the stem of the oil tank, there is a port welded/braised into the stem of the oil tank. Its about 1" below the filler cap and pointing aft towards the firewall.

Has a square plug into it, and is safety wired shut.

Does anyone else have one of these and if so whats it for? Engine is a C-85-12.

IT'S A BOMB!

Sounds like a bung for the oil return line on a oil/air seperator. At least you could use it for such, but I've never seen one. Is it leaking?

Had one of those on my 65 before changing the tank. It could be used for adding oil while crossing the Atlantic An oil separator dump sounds good too. Could be used for turbo oil retun line
joea: It was obviously put in there for a purpose, but only the guy who drilled and tapped the hole will know what it was for. Mine was 1/8 npt drilled through the neck plate that bolts to the bottom of the engine.

Its not leaking but had never seen one and was curious. Agree that its for adding oil or air/oil separator or the like, just hope that the IA does not ask about it!
