L16A

Have my eye on a L16A (basket) that may come up for sale. Does anyone know if there is a STC to install a 0200 in a L16. I'm assuming probably, as they're TC 759. I believe Buzz Wagner holds the STC for 0200/7AC but not sure where the L16 fits in there.

Thanks,
Mike

I think Buzz's STC would cover it..... since an L-16A is the same as a 7BCM. His paper work is very, VERY loose!

Mike,
I might consider the Aircraft Specialties, O200 crank, rods, and piston STC. That would be easier than certifing with a different powerplant, as you are modifing the existing engine.
Also there is a STC for replacing the C85 crankcase with an O200 crankcase. By using the previous STC with this one you might be able to get what you desire. If you know what I mean.

Mike,

We have an engine that Don Swords put together
in our L-4. It's made out of an 0-200 case, 0-200 crank,
and 0-200 pistons. I'm not sure what the cam is, but it dynos
out at 97hp. It is STCed to a C-85. We really like it.
Remember, anything over 90hp in a Champ, you have
to do that STUPID ( :( )spar inspection EVERY year.

Thanks Don, I had kind of forgotten about the spar inspection, although they (spars) are supposed to be inspected on the annual anyway. I did buy the L16 today after making the 350 miles around trip. It doesn't have an engine that's why I asked the question. I guess my first choice would be a C85-12 as it apparently had electric at one time. I ordered the CD from the feds so I can hopefully find the correct 337's (most paperwork is missing, of course....what else is new?).

The fuselage and all the control surfaces are ready to cover (workmanship is superb) I need my AI to do the wing inspection after I get everything up here (another problem :? ) Looks like a good decent project and should keep me out of Mrs. Berg's way and in the shop for a year or two. After that, I hope to park it along side your daughter and son in laws L-4 at Oshkosh. Here I am a frustrated Air Force pilot, and I wind up flying a L16, .

I'll let you know when I get it home and you can fly over some day and check it out.

Regards,
Mike Berg

Good hunting Mike. Do you have the serial number?
Don, you must have slipped on the keys. An increase of that amount would require an amended Type Certificate.

Good morning Paul,

Don Swords told us it dynos out at 97hp.
There is no mention of 97hp in any paper work that we have.
His STC allows him to stamp the engine data tag C-85.
We had to get an Airworthiness Certificate for
our L-4 and the Designee had no problem with the engine.

Hope this helps, :D

Don,
Did you have to furnish the engine case, cranks, etc.? Just thinking ahead a little. I have two 65's cases and cranks (one I got from you) but that don't do me much good right now. Probably a year or so from worrying about an engine. Hopefully, the airframe parts are all there......It's the little ones that get you and after being moved a couple of times.....you get the picture.

Paul, I do have the serial number from some old paperwork). Was a estate sale, but the owner/N number is correct (for a change). The data tag may be there, but I forgot to look for it.......among all the stuff ( it does seem pretty complete). Anyway, ordered the CD last night ($6.50 now). Hopefully that will answer a lot of questions.

More later/when I know more>

Mike,
When I was rebuilding my L16 I was able to get It,s military service record. I think it came from Ft. Rucker. I have the info at home if you need to get in contact.
In my opinion the L16 is the correct combination for a Champ, one wing tank and the 85hp.

Thanks Paul,
Be interesting to see what's on the CD. Most of these wound up in the Civil Air Patrol or so it seems. On another note: when I was doing a L16 search, I saw your name and L16. Seems the year listed was 1956 but that can't be right :?: unless that would be the airworthiness date.....maybe???

Mike,

We sent the old mags which were used as exchange,
the carb which was used, and the oil tank which was used.
Don Swords furnished the rest.

Its a typo in the record. The airworthiness was issued in 56 when it was struck from inventory. The aircraft was built in 1947 as a L16A. It now has a large dorsal and hydraulic brakes like a L16B.
Most of the aircraft is stock 7AC, but there are some unique items. The cabin is faired with aluminum stampings rather than wood. Also the formers are aluminum and the shape is a little different on some. The only wood in the aircraft is the floorboards, stringers and spars.
Good luck on the rebuild and let me know if I can help in any way.

Did the Air Force ever paint, L16's in yellow? I'd rather use that rather than the silver grey that most are (no offense). I have a picture of one but not sure exactly what shade of yellow it is. Right now the airframe is finished in Cub color (ugh) and I'm going to repaint it. Just wondering if anyone knew the paint number....if there is one. Hoping to finish the fuselage over the summer so I can tackle the control surfaces and wings next winter.
