Fuel Survey
Fuel Survey
Tony Markl on the fAA email list has been running a survey on fuel and our Aeronca's. Lets see if we cannot increase the information he is getting. This will help all of us.
1. Name
2. Location State
3. Type of fuel (Auto/100LL/Mix)
4. MMO (if used and quanity and frequency)
5. Engine type / Time since TOH
6. Years using this procedure
7. Do you check for alcohol in the fuel? If so, how?
8. Have you had any stuck valves? If so what do you believe the cause was?
Comments:

Comments:
1. Joe Abrahamson
2. Arizona
3. Mostly use auto gas, but mix in some 100LL every 5-7 loads of fuel.
4. Have not been using MMO but will start in the future.
5. C85-12 and believe the engine is 5-600 hours since top overhaul.
6. Two years.
7. None other than the standard check I do with the fuel.
8. None and do not know of anyone else who has had problems with automotive fuels in their Aeronca.
As long as the fuel does not have any of the extra additives I feel that its safe to use in our planes.

fuel survey
l. Doc Shuler
2.Londonderry, NH
3. Avgas
4.MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) Absolutely, per Roy Redman (see below)
4 oz per l0 gals, added to fuel.
5. 65hp cont., 478smoh, 90stoh
6. l and l/2 years.
7. No
8. No
9. Comments: She burns between 3.8 and 4.2 gph, and AVGAS in NH is now $4.41 a gallon. Roy Redman, owner of Rare Aircraft Ltd, Oneaida, MN, (he and his sons rebuilt the WACO that the AOPA gave away a few years back) where I bought the plane, advised never to use MOGAS because there is no law which compels the MOGAS makers to reveal which additives are in their product. Not so with AVGAS.

3. Type of fuel (Auto/100LL/Mix) As available usually 100LL
4. MMO (if used and quanity and frequency) Never
5. Engine type / Time since TOH A65 1650 hrs SMOH 350 STOH
6. Years using this procedure n/a

8. No stuck valves. As per Teledyne-Continental recommdations for using 100LL, idle on ground at no less than 1000 rpm, and lean at altitude. MMO may also help--been using it since the disappearance of 80 octane, and havn't had any problems.

Before you believe anything I say, check with two more people. If they agree, I must be right.

shelbyville, TN.
mostly auto fuel (Amoco or BP middle grade). 100LL when away from home field.
yes...use MMO every tank. 4 onces to 10 gal.
A65, 875 SMOH, 425 STOH
4 1/2 years using auto fuel (since I've owned it)
I've never checked for alcohol in fuel. Don't use other brands of fuel.
No stuck valves.
I've been running this engine for 4 1/2 years since I bought the Chief (about 430 hrs.) . Runs good on auto fuel. Plugs are clean and no stuck valves. Do use MMO.

Generally use auto fuel, but mix in 100LL on occasion. Never had problems with any fuel in the Champ. When I had my Cherokee 100LL seemed to foul the plugs.
Very seldom use MMO
Engine type is A65 with 140 hrs SMOH
Have used auto fuel for about 20 years.
Seldom check for alcohol; but if I do I use the water method. Alway buy my fuel from the same Cenex station and their pumps are marked accordingly.
Never had stuck valves on any of my aircraft in 25 years of ownership. One of our flying club Champs with a A65 did have a stuck valve once. We dropped the valve into the cylinder and cleaned the valve guide with a guide cleaner and drill. Not sure of the cause; but might have been inactivity.
