Quote Engine # ?

I've been trying to verify all of the major components on my Champ, because the project didn't come with any logbooks. My engine data plate looks authentic. However, where the serial # is stamped it says, quote engine #, instead of just engine #_ . Is this normal or not?

Can you pls post a photo of the dataplate?

There are blank plates being sold out there and this could be a replacement, or could be factory but hard to tell with out seeing it.

Yes, quote engine number labeling is common in Continental engine data plates that I have seen. Also, they been produced with aluminum, brass and stainless steel.

I'd call that the serial number. That looks like a genuine plate, the new ones don't have rasied letters or stamp area's. They are silk screened.

Generally, -8 engines will have a serial number that ends in 8. Same for -12's end in 12. But that's not always the case. Get it??

Does anyone notice anything interesting here? Notice where the dataplate is located on the case?

It appears to be a genuine dataplate but its not in the normal location. As I remember it, the usual location is about 10 inches futher aft, on this same side of the engine, not forwards where this photo shows it at this time.

What does this mean? Who in the world knows but wonder if you have holes for the original dataplate drilled in the case over the rear cylinder?!

I have seen data plates on the front of the engine as posted. Most were on early engines and cases. Joe your engine appears to be a later model with a later case.

My A-65-8 was born in 1943 and was converted to an A-75-8 in 1944 after it was 200 hours old. My data plate is forward like shown in powers pic's. I just wish the plate was in the conditon of powers.I buddy on mine works at Teledyne/Continetal in Mobile and they want 100.00 for another.

I picked up a silk screen version but I'm not inpressed with the looks of it. Mark

Doug,

The photo shown was the first one I found on the internet. My C85 which dates from at least the 1950's has the plate on the rear.

Only ones I have seen forwards are ones that have had one replaced and you could see the holes in the rear for the original dataplate. The plate the picture above does look genuine so if you have logbooks matching this number would not worry.

I don't have the log books to the engine, but there are no holes anywhere else on the case.

My 7AC has the DATA plate in the forward location. It happens to to be an O170 military model of the A65.
