Aileron Cable Replacement

Post by Dennis D'Angelo »

Clan:

Anyone have information on the lengths of the aileron cables for the 7AC Champ? The manuals I have seem to miss this information. Or is there a spot on the forum where the lengths and the turn buckle types are mentioned. My cables are showing wear and its time to replace them all along with the turn buckles.

As usual, thanks for the help.

103 7/16 inches center of eyelet to center of eyelet.
33/64" center of eyelet to closest edge of nicopress fitting. Squeeze fitting 3 times and check with nicopress gauge.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have the cable lengths that go from the aileron bellcrank to the control bellcrank as well? I have to replace all the cables to/from the ailerons. Appreciate the help.

Aileron cable replacement

Post by Tugaske2 »

My diagrams show 104 1/32 inches from the outside of the hole in the eyelets (1-2453) which would be the same as Jody's..1-2084 nicopress sleeves are used.. Four of these aileron balance cables are required (1-2339)...As for the cabin aileron control cables 91-2397) ..they are 35 1/2 inches long from the outsides of the holes in the 1-2453 and the AN 100-4..
I will send a picture oof the diagram when I figure out how???

Thanks for the information. A diagram/picture would be helpful; however, I now have enough information to estimate the length of cable needed to begin the replacement process. Greatly appreciate the support.

Thanks, Bill. My computer lost a bunch of drawings, so I couldn't find the regular cable, only the balance cable.

When you pull the old cable out tie some string or safety wire to it. Then pull out the old cable pulling in the string or safety wire. Then reverse to install. Mark

Mark;

That is the plan; however, nothing in aviation is a simple as it seems. We'll see how it goes next weekend when I attempt the removal and re-install. THanks.

Double D,
We use the old cable to pull in the new one. Many of the cables are finished on one end only so you can pull them through the fairlead or pressure seal.

Thanks for the advice. I was planning to use the old cable as a guide...just in case the individual cables measure a little differently than the Aeronca drawings. Regardless, I will make the swap this weekend...so any additional input is appreciated. I will let you know how much of a bear the job is...consider the source...a first time cable puller.
