I was seriously thinking about it...found a few extra quarters under the couch a few weeks ago...seems like I keep running into these "snags"...title...paint...cost...you know...too picky for what I want to spend. I'd gladly pay for a good one with floats...or maybe just wait another year and buy a new Savage Cub? Fun to shop but sooner or later I'm going to get too old for this stuff...hope all is well in MN/HI...I won't ask about the Rebel!!!! Mark
Mark,

Come to Middletown in June and see the new Champ. You could end up flying it home!

Doug,
We don't have any Razorback yet, and it was heavy. We checked Grade A with dope and most of the synthetic stuff.
Those straight wings were a great airplane. My wifes uncle had a SM7B painted in Western colors. I have a SR6 in the barn that is slowly moving to the front.

Joe-
I might just show up this year and shop around...not for a new one though...can't justify spending 100k on a Champ...would like to meet some of the folks who can though.

Back to the paint issue...I just read a posting that said some auto paints were on the STC prior to 2001 and thereby legal to use (functionality a different issue)...and on it goes...

Until about 5+/- years ago, you could top coat with anything when using PolyFiber or Randolph. So don't get bent out of shape on the legal issue if it's got PPG, Imron, Polyurethane or _____.

HI, PPG and Superflight samething, just a some flex agents, I've used them all, I'll stick with Polyfiber for tube and rag planes, I have also used the waterbased (latex) stuff and it won't last, and runs easily, but if your out for looks, superflight is it, but if you want something that will last and is easy to apply, and repair, go with Polyfiber. IMHO. Jack

Peeto,

Glad to hear you are back in the game!! It is really hard to find one of these old planes out there with ZERO issues. I figured that out a long time ago. I guess I just said heck with it and bought the one I thought was good enough for my mission and didn't worry about it. Seems like there has always been an owner somewhere's along the line that fixes things with baleing wire! JK, but you get the idea.

I looked at the Savage cub also and seems that I read that it had a couple of handling quircks. As long as you stayed away from that area of flight it was a good little plane. Seems the landing gear wasn't the best for off-airport type flying either. If I can find where I read it I'll forward the link.

I still would like a SC also but there prices are out of my range. Flew in a O-235 powered SC yesterday and it was a nice little plane. Also flew in a 90 HP J-3. It was fun but I don't think I would want one..CRAMPED!!! My Champ feels like a luxury car compared to the room in the front of that thing!!

If you are looking for LSA or Experimental...the Just Highlander or the Rans S-7 are a couple of good choices.

Paul-

If I still had some Razorbck I would send it--but it is long gone. Your Stinson SR-6 sounds neat. I had one --a basket case that I sold 40 years ago N15117, it is being resorted now. Also had a SR-5 that is some where arround Santa Maria now, but unlicensed, N14182.

The SR-5 was a hybrid--straight wing, later type fuselage, flaps that only came down when you put in full nose up tirm and a non airfoild empenage. It wasn't the best of the breed. Am partial to the old Stinsons tho--had and SM-8A, N416Y (it had Razorbck) and is out your way now I think in a museum, also had a JR-S, N10865 now being restored in Oklahoma and another one N10883 that now belongs to my son.

Got my instrument rating in a 108-3 in the 1950's using Low Freq and a Narco Omnigator and dark goggles and orange plastic in the windshied along with needle, ball and airspeed. Last big project was the Curtiss Wright Travel Air 6B that is now owned by Delta Air Lines and is in their museum.

Now am back to a Prewar Chief like my first airplane in the 1950's--that needs some TLC after being neglected by the previous owners along with my Champ and Cessna 182. Putting VG's on the Champ (the 182 has them) and looking for a C85 for the Chief--it has the seaplane cetification so it can go with a C85.

Hoping for Middletown, but won't have airplane--have a family commitment in Michigan during that period.

Doug
