Airport Fire

Thought you might find this interesting. As airport manager of our small grass strip, I got a call last Saturday night that there was a fire at our airport. We have an old gentleman (85 year old bachelor) who lived on the airport in a trailer and was our caretaker and watchman. He's lived there for over 20 years and was a incredible 'pack rat'. You could hardly walk through his trailer for all the junk, papers, magazines, etc. stacked up along the walls and in the extra rooms. We probably all know someone like him. Apparently he fell asleep while making supper and the place caught on fire. He escaped with burns over his head, back and hands and they helicoptered him to the Twin Cities burn center where he will be recovering for several weeks. As can be seen, the trailer is a total loss.

I should also mention that he owns a 1948 Stinson and gave me one of my first rides back in the 1950's, but he no longer flies. I guess the Stinson is sold but is still kept in his also cluttered hangar.

Hopefully he will recover from this although at age 85 he's now homeless.
Think I might clean my shop this afternoon.

Mike,

I'm wondering if your Caretaker/Watchman has any insurance?
If so he might be okay. If not, is someone going to set
up an account at a bank or someplace so we can donate money or stuff to help him out. Please keep us informed.

Thanks Don,
Actually he did have insurance. I just checked today. At his age and condition he'll have to most likely move into a nursing home for awhile and then probably a self care unit. Money wise I think he's OK, but mostly needs moral support and we're planning on having a clean up day April 12 as that's when we're scheduled for our annual flying club meeting anyway.

Thanks for the thoughts. Fly in some Saturday for coffee. Another mini-blizzard today  . I often wonder why I continue to live here then I remember: April-October 8) .
