Aviation Products Tailwheel
If this is true, this very good news for the tailwheel community. The tailwheel has been used frequently around these parts and everyone seems to like it very well. It turns when you ask and full swivels when you ask it, nothing more or less. The replacement parts are very reasonable and the owner is just a very nice guy. Not that I'm biased or anything.
Again, CAR 4A and Part 23 are two different standards. The Champs were built under CAR 4A and tailwheels weren't being built to a specification like one finds for the main gear. Likewise, the new Citabrias, which use the Scott tailwheel, were never designed for the 7AC type airplane but everyone seems just fine with the Scott tailwheel on Champs. Would anyone put a non steerable tailwheel on 7KCAB just becuase it shows on the TC? The PMA'd Alaska Bushwheel works fine, yet it won't be found in the TC, either. Part 23, CAR 4A, STC, PMA, Form 337 and owner produced parts, each used according to rule, are all legitimate means to maintain airworthy airplanes.
One more thing, the Aviation Products dual yoke tailwheel just looks so cool on taildraggers!

TC for 11 series
I looked on the FAA web site today (www.faa.gov) and ACA still owns the TC's for the 11 series:
11AC/BC - TC A-761
11A - TC A-804
11CC - TC A-796
11E - TC A-804
I know very littel about the 11 series (I'm still struggling to fet acquanted with my recently purchased 7AC), but I hope this will be somewhat helpful to some of you 11 series owners.
I put this in another discussion topic, but if anyone knows where I can find new or used - in good condition a set of brake drums for the 7AC with mechanical drum brakes (Part # 159-00104) at a price much more reasonable than Univar ($336.00 each / 4-6 week delivery), please let me know at darflyboy@bellsouth.net.

They never go cheap, but one thing, Don Jones is a good guy so you need not worry about the seller.

It would be 30 % of the cost of a new one and if you are a 2008 paid up member of the NAA we can work out a lower cost or even a trade, but you need to be all paid up for 2008.
Either way I send, you look, then send $ or drum back.

So what was the final outcome of the API tailwheel on a Champ? Can you. or Can't you? I tend to lean towards it's not listed on the TC and it's not PMA approved. I'm looking for a steerable tailwheel. What's a person to do.

Del, you might look at a Lang. I was indifferent about them until I used one, now I'll probably replace my Scott 2000 with one.

This is helpful as I have to look for trusted experience. I have no experience yet but plan on changing all that soon. I just dont think I will be happy with the non swivel type that I currently have. I just dont know yet. I will be doing alot of grass strip as we have a good one here at Columbia Ca 022 I guess I'm on the prowl for one . Thanks for the advise.

Del,
I would use the API tail wheel. I use one on my L16 and TAC. If you need to look at one close up the L16 is at Livermore and the TAC is at Hollister.
I,ve also got a pile of Scott 2000, 3-24's 3000, Langs, Deckers, Imperial, and Maule both solid and pneumatic that I don't use.

Paul: I have been meaning to ask you are you the guy at Red Sky. I came in there a few years back to check out your newly re furbished Champ. The paint was still wet. I had just purchased my 7AC and was in Livermore doing a job converting a Cat 833 scraper to fullly remote control operation and covered with armor plateing. You ended up giving me a ride in your L-16 .Just wondering?

Paul: No you did a great job on the landing. It was quite breezy that day to boot. It was my first time in a taildragger and you did a superb job at making sure I was fully addicted to flying. I have been about 2 1/2 years now on the restoration of my 7AC and really looking forward to obtaining my lic and learning to fly in my own plane. I can not thank you enough for taking the time for a person interested in flying and giving a ride so that they can decide if it is something that they would like to pursue. You are a great example of the good things in this sport. Thanks
