WING TANKS

I have a pair of wing tanks( supposedly) for an Aeronca. I'm wondering if there are any approvals or drawings to install them in an 11AC. I plan on recovering the wings at some point and could really use the extra fuel capacity.

Is this an 11 series Chief? Does it have the 8 gallon aux tank in the back? With 15 up front and 8 in the back, I couldn't imagine needing even more fuel in wing tanks.

Agree with Brian on this. I have 23 gallons in my Chief and its time to land after a couple of hours! This is enough even for the larger engine transplants and not sure why you would want more, unless you do not have the 8 gallon fuselage tank installed.

That said, the Chief/Champ wings are the same and you can put extra tanks in there if you are planning on extended flights. Without paperwork the best thing I can say to do is to email one of us the photos and we can try to identify them, then you can try to obtain the STC paperwork and use them in your aircraft.

Just so this is not onesided, I'll disagree with you. I have never had too much fuel. You might have too much baggage so your over grossed, but not too much fuel.

I'd like 6 hours of fuel. 3 hours to go down, and 3 hours to come back without refueling. It seems like many places are either closed (Holiday or weekend or both) (when else do you fly) and they don't have self service fuel, or they don't have any fuel on the field.

My 182 only has 84 gallons 79 useable and it's NOT enough. My Champ has 26 gallons in two wing tanks. NO, it's not enough, but any more and I'd be WAY over grossed in the Champ.

Yes there are STC's for wing tanks in Chiefs. Go to www.airweb.faa.gov/rgl then you can click on airplane type or on
TC # A761 for Chiefs and find the STC's for your airplane.

No real disagreement with your post but with 23 gallons in the plane you already have 6.5 hours flight time, no reserve, at 3.5 gal/hr burn. You could put another 11 gallons and that would give you 9.7 hours hours available.

One thing that should be added here is what is the engine type? The figures I quoted above are for the 65 hp Continental. My Chief has a 85 hp and it burns 4.5/hr. There are others out there with larger engines and they get close to 7 gallons an hour, and in this case more fuel is a must.

If someone really needs more then go for it but thats a long time to spend in a Chief/Champ and just wanted to let him know.

You also might look under the STC's for Champs as the wings are the same and your fuel tanks may be for a Champ.

I have a 115 Lycoming and at 2550rpm it burns 7 1/2 per hour indicating 111mph. No, I don't know if any instrument is correct but thats what it shows. Looks good anyway.

This aircraft is on floats and has a 100Hp Continental so the miles per gallon is not that great. I go into some remote areas, so I need to carry enough for a round trip plus some local flying. I was considering removing the aft aux tank when I do this. I'll try researching the FAA stc's, but I was hoping someone had done a field approval on this or maybe there had been a factory installation of some type.
