What will dope stick to?

When I spray my final white coat of dope I've been hoping I can spray over my wing pieces that are sticking out of the wing. My jury strut attach points and tie down etc. They have a good coat of epoxy primer on them. I was just hoping I could scuff it up and spray the dope on. I'm wondering if it will stick or not. Has anyone tried this?

Dude, I can't speak for Dope, but I can tell you Poly Tone (Stits) does not stick to cured epoxy at all. Will peel off in big sheets. You have to spray a bond coat of epoxy and lay the Poly Tone in it wet. Some of the old timers need to speak up about dope. David J.

If you are using Randolph butyrate or similar, then yes it will stick if you rough up the surface. It isn't perfect and it may chip easier than using a 2 pack paint but you won't have any problems.

I have just rejuvenated a butyrate covered Citabria that had some patches with 2 pack on - they walk among us believe me !

Gave it a roughing with 80 grit and it went on fine.

The beauty of the old systems is they are so easy to repair, tidy up and touch up.

Agree about the polytone. Our other airplane has that on and it is absoultely rubbish on metal surfaces. We constantly need to touch up and repaint where it comes off.

You can argue solvent/non solvent until the cows stop farting - give me cellulose, a thin mask, some good music and a headache the next day.....

The butyrate will stick to the components. Like the others have said, clean and prep for painting and it will stick on the metal parts. Both the nitrate and butyrate are basically lacquer paints with a bit of linseed oil in them.
