Chief Y-control Arm Bearings

Post by shep »

Anyone have experience with the pressed in bearings on the Y-shaped control arm? The Center Bearing on my chief is stiff and since I am in the middle of a rebuild I would like to remove, clean and grease pack the bearings.

Any advice on how to remove the bearings or where one might purchase new bearings.

Mine are inscribed with "NICEBALLBEARING COMP Phil PA" "N#5273"

Thanks

Well persistence paid off. After verifying that replacement bearings were available I ended up grinding down a 5/16 x4 inch carriage bolt to provide a flat surface. Gently heated the tubing that held the bearings with a propane torch and tapped them out. Some needed more aggressive tapping than others but all eventually came out with no damage to the Y-arm.

Shep,

You might want to post the name and number of the replacement bearing to help the next person doing this.

I took mine to a local chain and bearing shop who measured the inside and outside diameter and told me that that bearing size is quite common. I had my choice of two different qualities - I chose the most expensive sealed bearing which come out to about $11.00/each. They are a better bearing than the originals. The originals you could not re-grease with driving them out. I also found the specs of the original by Googling the name and part # above.
