McDowells are completely mechanical and have no electrical parts. Sounds like someone adapted another starter...C150's used to have a pull type switch, but this sounds different.

Lee,

How about some photos of what you have? That way we can tell better what you have.

Agree with the above, and the McDowell starters are totally mechanical with no buttons and just a handle to pull.

McDowell isnt a McDowell that I have

Post by leeport33 »

Thank you for the comeback on the starter. Thought I had an antique
here, but its just an old piece of junk I guess. Thanks for the help
and wont call it a McDowell any more, just junk. Thanks again. Lee B.

Yep, that sounds similar to what my old 172 has in it. I "T" shaped handle that you pull to engage the starter.

You should not call it junk until you throw it out, might be able to use it to trade Joe A. or Ebay it for something.

Agree with Mike. I do not have a Chief anymore, so do not need the parts, but someone else on the list might, no matter what it is.

Cable pull to switch starter

Post by leeport33 »

Thanks for the information. This is really a great site for those of us that
need a lot of help and information. Will keep the old starter on the
shelf in the hangar and if anyone needs it they are welcome. Its an old
thing and pretty heavy. I have a generator also, but do know that the
gears are worth smething as the new Alt thing with the STC out of
PHoenx wants the gears for their set up. Have to give them 500 bucks
till they see that your gears are ok. They work thru B & C and the
out the door cost is around 900 bucks. lot of money for amps and volts.
Thanks again folks for all of the valuable information I have received.
Lee.
