Replacement Brake Clips

I am at the point in my project where I am rebuilding the wheels and brakes (46 Chief). When I got the project, the seller told me that he was including new brake disc clips. These new clips are close, but different. The old clips just "snapped" into place, where these new clips seem to be held in with a chrome button type plug. These new clips look like they are slipped over the rim of the wheel, and a hole must be drilled in the wheel for the button pin to be inserted. I am just guessing here...perhaps these are not replacements for my wheel, but I thought I would ask around. Are these some sort of 'New and improved" brake clip? They came with no instructions at all. Thanks....Matt 12-09-08 Update! Problem solved. These clips were not for a Chief. I found someone with the correct clips that swapped me even for the right ones.

There are 2 types of clips. Some with a round hole and the buttons, the others have a square hole in them. The Luscomb foundation has the ones with the buttons, not sure of the square hole clips

Have seen both styles on Ebay and believe that the one with the square holes is being offered by someone there now.

Classic Aero LLC (Luscombe Endowment) at 480-650-0883 has both styles of clips, and they have linings, actuator arms, and discs; plus many other parts for the GY and Cleveland brake systems. (FWIW, the Luscombe Foundation was closed in 2004)

The button style clip is a later system that can be safely secured with tape, and are less likely to be lost in service. Early wheels can be modified to accommodate the later clips with buttons (which are more expensive). :idea:

What is the mod? Do you have to make a hole in the rim for the button to fit? Any big paperwork issue?

One must finish grinding /filing/ off the internal 'nubs' flush with the wheel. That done, the clip is positioned and a small hole drilled using the clip as a guide. that hole is used to install the button retainer.

This essentially converts from the early style wheel clip installation to the later style as was done in the factory design revisions by Goodyear. Since they changed all the part numbers, and offered very little field documentation on GA applications, one must trust that their internal re-design and delivery of that configuration was a minor TC design change, and as such is a simple substitution. I have seen a vague note on all of this some 20 years ago, but It was a partial paper, and not something quotable in a 337, from the way I read it, just an explanation of interchange in the designs (dealer note).
