L-16 identity

Can someone help me identify an aircraft that I think is an Aeronca?
I have an old picture of my brother sitting in a Civil Air Patrol airplane.
the plane looks like an Aeronca but, it looks like it might have fold down doors like a pa-18. The plane was a former USAF aircraft , could the military birds have 'clamshell doors', instead of the usual Aeronca door?
