Cylinder Overhaul Shops

I am looking for a shop that overhauls cylinders. I only know of Gibson in El Reno, OK. I seem to remember a shop in Indiana or Ohio that some of you have used. Any contact info would be appreciated. I have 8 cylinders off of 2 C-85 engines that I would like to have the best 4 overhauled.

I just had Gibson do 4 A65 cylinders for me. Very happy with them, although haven't had a chance to run the engine yet since having them installed again.

long way to send them, but Bulduc aviation out of anoka county airport in Minnesota does outstanding work!!

I agree with Big Chief except it's "Bolduc' @ (763) 780-1185. I had a A65 cylinder rebuilt by them and it ran about $570 including parts, guides, rings, studs, labor, etc. but it came back like new and yellow tagged if I remember correctly.

I would buy new cylinders. By the time you have eight inspected and four overhauled the cost difference will be close to the same.

You are probably right. However I overhauled my first C-85 with new ECi cylinders at around $810 each. I want my second engine to be to servicable specifications. It won't be used much once I get the Champ flying. The Champ gets the first, goldplated, engine.

The second engine will probably only fly 20 hrs or so a year. I was hoping to do a good job on the lower end and scrape by on the cylinders and save $1,000 to $1,500. Maybe I am wrong about it.

Out here in the Bay Area a cylinder overhaul is running about $750. Add the price of a new piston and pin and the costs are getting close.

I called Gibson Aviation. Marshall quoted about $600 per cylinder. I checked the AERO website and new ECi steel cylinders are $803 and new nickel cylinders are $995. So you are pretty much right on. If I went with new, I would prefer the nickel on a low useage engine. So that adds $800 to the overhaul.

I will see how my lower end passes inspection first. Thanks for your insight.

I think in the case of A65's there is no source other than Superiors which is a 'kit' as far as I know so we're kind of stuck with either trying to repair the old one or installing a Superior set (4) for around $3500. Although there seems to be a lot of 'reconditioned' cylinders around.
