Small Tail Chief with C-85
Small Tail Chief with C-85
I'm sure this subject has been covered, but I've spent the last 45 minutes searching this forum and others to find out if there is an STC or approved data to put an 85 hp engine on a small tail Chief. Can anyone point me to something definitive?
I know the new build Champs have the small tail and 100 hp, but I'm not sure that helps.
Thanks in advance...
Kyle

It may be that you need the STC from Charlie Lasher. If you use a C-85-12F it is a Lasher STC. I am not sure about the C-85-8 or C-85-8F. I think Buzz Wagner's STCs were for O-200 and lycoming O-235's Chiefs. Wagoner did sell a bolt on dorsal fin for the 7AC and 11AC which was recomended for the increased power.

Charlie Lasher is gone also, but a young relitive has the STC. dont know
if its his son or just who it is. Can look it up in my paperwork as had to
get the STC for the engine that was installed in my Chief and was not
legal, so the person I purchased the plane from had to do the STC
routine with the Lasher relitive. Should have looked it all up before
writing this, but papers are in my safe and I'm in the area of nap time.
anyone interested type it in and I will take the time to research this for you. safe is fireproof thats why they are in there, before someone
wonders.

c-85-12's in Chiefs
I'm trying to find the right way to use a C-85-12 in an 11-AC. I'm still short of finding documented precedent, but have discovered several things along the way:
The Wagner STC's don't cover the C-85-12 (O-200 and O-235 only)
They require a longer engine mount, but do not require the big dorsal)
The Lasher A-65 to C-85-12 STC is only for Champs, not Chiefs
(David Lasher does have an STC for using a C-85-12 in an 11-CC by covering the starter and alternator holes.)
Aeronca Service Letter No. 17 covers converting an 11-AC to an 11-BC by adding the large dorsal and a C-85-8. It does not address a c-85-12.
Sky-Tec declares that their starter is short enough to fit behind a C-85-12 on an original 11-AC engine mount without firewall mods.
I'd love to hear from someone who has actually put the 85-12 in a Chief, especially with a Sky-Tec on it, and to have a peek at the 337's that went with it.

Alan,
My old 11AC/BC had a C85-12 in it, but was approved under a 337 back in the 1950's. If you want to look up info on it with the FAA CD, it was N3230E.
It had no starter but before I sold it had purchased a B&C starter to install on it. Room was not a problem and while it was tight, it would fit. The Skytec and B&C starters are about the same size.
Many people have done a "total loss" battery system on Chief's and Champs, and simply charge the battery ever month or so.

I tried to post an answer to your question on 337 and install of
a starter in a -12 but it went to some place else. I dont know how to
work any of this right I guess. Anyway if I manage to get this where
you can read it. E mail me with your address and I will copy all the
paperwork I have on this subject including the 337 stuff and it will also
include the Battery box paperwork and regular mail it to you.

Here are two posts from the Aeronca email discussion group.
Alan,
My Chief has the dash 12 and the SkyTec starter fits quite nicely with about a quarter inch to spare. The engine had to be removed to install the starter. At one point in the mid 90's the airplane had an O-235. It had been converted from the dash 8 85 Continental. Soon after it was converted back to the 85 only this time a 12 was used. An inspector from the Detroit FSDO signed the approval for the dash 12 and yes I have it.
