Howdy all! I'm a prospective Aeronca owner and have a question or 2. I'm considering buying a Chief from a guy near here (KC) and want to know 1) how do I verify the age of the airplane. He says it's a '47 but.... and 2) the engine is A65, what is involved in converting it to mechanical starter? 3) And as long as I have your attention I may as well ask what are some of the typical problem areas of this airplane I should be looking for? Thanks a bunch.

one is listed on this web site for $1500. you can learn to hand prop for a lot less. no parts are available when it breaks, you still have to prime and pull the prop through 3-4 times, then get in the plane and give the starter handle a pull. if it doesnt start you get out of the plane reposition the prop for a normal hand proping and try again.
somewhere in the cockpit there should be a data plate that gives the serial # and date of manufacture.
if you want a starter you should probably look for a champ that has a c -85 and electrical system. good luck bernie nowlen
