Oil leaking thru firewall on or in Tachometer cable

Post by low-n-slow »

We have a problem with oil leaking on the floorboards of our L-16. It appears to be coming thru the firewall and dripping from the Tach cable. Anyone else had this problem and how do we fix it?
thanks

Jon,
Change the tach drive seal. It can be tough to remove. Many tach drive housings have been broken trying to remove it.

Hi Jon, as Paul posted its the tach drive seal, replaced mine last fall when I got the old seal out I could see why mine was leaking the rubber center part of the seal was completely gone. Pressed in the new seal and no more leaks.
What engine do you have, I had to remove the left mag to replace the gasket and that made removing the tach drive soo much easier, I have a 0-200 so the tach drive is sandwhiched between the starter and the gen.

Please remember that the Tach drive housing is reverse threaded. So to loosen you must turn it clockwise. If you look closely at the base of the housing it has an arrow cast into the aluminum. And do use caution in removing the seal as the previous poster said. Use some wood as a platform to "tap" the seal out. I think Spruce has these seals available.

I think DC is talking about the A65 which is indeed L/H thread. I jumped to the conclusion that we were speaking of the C series. In either case the tach seal is the culprit.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it will be a bugger to get at as it is sandwhiched between the starter/Generator and the two mags. The engine is C85 with 0200 components STC. This is an awsome engine!

GREAT tip on the reverse thread. It looks like in the past someone has worked it over with a vise grip, probably turning the wrong way!

Off to oshkosh- Good time!
