Aileron Hing Bearings for an 11CC.

Post by Bart »

I am restoring a 48 11CC. I just started on the wings. I pulled up the drawings for the aileron hinges and all 3 of them are shown to be the K4A Bearing. However when I dissembled them only the one on the Bellcrank was of the K4A type the other 2 are smaller in diameter 11/16 vs 3/4 and are almost twice as wide. These bearings have no markings on them. I have gone to a local bearing shop, but they were no help at all. Can anyone identify these, or tell me where I can purchase them?

Bart,
You may have some Citabria hinges mixed in. They use a different bearing. Drill out the rivets, it makes the bearing removal easier.

Thanks. I called Univar after I read your posting but they were not able to cross what I have.

Bart,
Just take your bearings to Dixie Bearings, and they can cross reference them, and get you new ones.

Bart,

If you cannot find help with the bearing numbers, I have cross reference data. What is the dwg #, sometimes it will list the vendor, Fafnir, McGill, Torrington, Timken etc.

I blew up the drawing 2-689 and its easier to read. It looks like there were alternative bearings on the sheet that I could not read. They are Schat CS 2170, Nice 1602 , Nice 402-2, and Nice 641B do any of them cross in your catalog? I think from the description I might have a Nice 402-2 since the drawing indicated that this bearing needs cad plating , but I an not sure.

Bart,

The data I have does not have Nice bearings. But found there website: rbcbearings.com.

Look under the 400 series bearings: Bearing 402-2V

bore: .250
OD: .687
outer race width: .250

Hope this helps out. If not, give me the dimensions and I will find the cross reference by size.

Old topic, but has anyone found these bearings (the 402-2V's or equivalent)? I've been to the local Motion Industries store, and they couldn't even cross reference them (their system automatically flagged them as "Aviation bearings... we don't sell those"). Dixie bearings down in Peachtree City, which shows as an RBC distributor, hasn't been able to get any response from RBC. So either I find these bearings somewhere else, or make or buy new aileron hinge brackets that will accept the .75" diameter KP4A bearings.

The aileron hinge brackets on my airplane cannot be modified to take the newer, bigger diameter bearings without violating the edge clearance requirements called out in the drawings.

I went to Brown Bearing in Spokane, WA and they were able to cross reference something close. The Cast Bracket took a KP4A which is still made, and is American. The other bearings are close but do not have the sholder as the Nice bearings. They crossed to a KYK Corp. 1602 ZZ. This is a chineese bearing.
Hope that helps.

The Kilian bearing part# SR-254 crosses with the Nice part#. Local company Applied Industrial Tech. has in stock at Kentucky location, $6.57 ea. plus freight. They are a national company you can look them up online or I will PM their contact info.

They are emailing the spec. sheet, will post when I receive.

Word of caution, "do not imply the bearings are for aircraft use". Every company ask that information  , it is frustrating!

Bart & Charles,

Thanks for the help. I'll try sourcing the Killian bearing locally, and if I can't find it, I'll follow up in this space or by PM.

Kyle,
If you find the Champ bearings with the extended inner race let the list know. There is a Stinson bearing that is supposed to work but I have never ordered them.
The 7ECA uses a .250 width bearing and has some special shim washers inserted during installation.
