Flange Ring-Carb Air box & Engine Baffles

Post by seaheli »

I am working on the tooling for the flange rings on the carb air box and engine baffle. They are spun from .032" alum. Can these rings stand to be a little thicker? Do they crush easily or wear thin from vibration?

Charles,

Your work is fantastic but your energy to do this stuff is even more impressive.

Between your energy and MikeB chastising my laziness, I have started working on my wings again. I need you guys to keep pushing me, maybe I will get done soon. Going to the hanger....see ya.

MikeB is still stuck in San Antonio for a couple of weeks visiting with the 'kids'. I need to hit the L16 when I get back (first I have to make some money :? ). Tomorrow I'm going to tour the ECI plant.....I'll report/you decide.

Should mention I'm not exactly vegetating down here. I'm in the process of writing a book on the crash of a B29 in Japan during WW2. Preliminary writing is posted in the Off Topic section on this site.

Keep at it Dennis!!

Charles,
I haven't seen any in-service problems with the thickness of the flanges. I don't see any problem in increasing the thickness. It could be better.
I drill out the spot welds and rivet the flanges to the new baffle. It's soft and you need to use the correct process and rivets or you distort the flange. A thicker flange would help here.

Dennis,

Thank you for the compliments of the skills that were taught to me. The energy comes from seeing a customer smile when they receive the parts for their aircraft. Keep working on your project!

Paul,

I am building two new air boxes for customers, any information to improve the parts helps out. Thank you for the knowledge that you share.
