welding on tubes and being able to use the compass

Hi all I am looking for a welder to do some welding on the lower tubes of my 46 champ all the welders I have talked to want to t.i.g. or heli arc weld it. Is there any thing you can do to stop the tubes from becomeing magentic? I know of 2 champs that had been mig or tig welded and the compass is useless even after degalsing(sp?)

Groundloop: If the welder places the ground close to the weld zone, it should not create a problem. Short of that, normalizing should get rid of some residuall that may be left. Dragging a magnet over the tube if done correctly will also eliminate it. Do not recommend that unless you know what you are doing. Even without welding the cose proximatey of the tubes to the compass , you barely have enough adjustment to swing it.

doesn't anyone there know how to Oxy/ Acetylene weld?

Sd2,

You bring up a very good point! All these airframes were welded by hand with Oxy/Acc in the 30's and 40's and it still works good! Main point is that you have to weld a bit here, move to another place and so on to avoid warping but there is no black magic to working with a torch.
