Magneto Drive Gears

Can anyone tell me if the drive gears used on Eisemann magnetos will work on a Slick 4301 - installed in a C85-12?

I guess I'll answer my own question - it appears that the LA-4 Eisemann mag usually used the Continental 36066 gear when installed on C series engines and the 0-200. Eisemann did make their own gear for a few installations, most notably the Ercoupe I believe. This is the same gear used on the Slick 4301 in this application and can be quite pricey so it would be a good thing if one can use them with new mags.

My Champ has a C85-12 which was fitted with new Slick 4301s in August '08 replacing Eiseman mags (I can't confirm the model number from the paperwork I have to hand, but "LA-4" does sound familiar) and I'm 99% certain that the drive gears were compatible and were not changed. I can check tomorrow with the engineer that did the swap.

Am building up a C-85-12 and had a Slick conversion kit. The kit comes with everything but the mag gears which are Part number 36066. If you need to buy them they are $450 a piece. The 36066 gear have a slotted back to fit the impluse. The C85-12 mags are left hand. The C85-8 mags use gear 36066 which is also used on the A65 and are right hand. Believe the Eiseman on the C85-12 also used the 36066 according to what info I have. I will look further into my manuals.

Do you mind me asking where you picked up your Slick conversion kit? My Eisemanns are working but they won't last forever.

Also, thanks for the description of the 36066 gear. Mine have the slotted back so maybe I got lucky!

I got mine from Aircraft Spruce over a year ago..But give Henry Krause a call at El Reno Parts- He took over the El Reno parts and works from his home I believe--he can give you the straight scoop and price--unfortunately Slick was was bought out by Champion and they raised the prices. Henry's number is 405-262-5191 or 405-659-9641. if you have the gears you are in luck as the C85-12 kit does not come with the gears--you get everything else including spark plugs, but not the gears.

Kind of interesting the Slick conversion kit does not come with gears. My A65 kit came with everything: mags, plugs, wires and gears. If you're converting from a set of standard Eisemans where in the world did they think the gears would come from (short of paying $900 for a pair of new ones). I noticed the Wag Aero catalog sells the 0200 kit for around $2000 with the trade in but doesn't say squat about no gears.

After reading your posts I went out and looked at the old Slicks (Model 447) on the 0200 engine for my L16 project plane. I see they have the 'slotted gears' and they look like the standard Slick gear. Hopefully they will work if I need to change mags once I get the engine overhauled.........hopefully, hopefully...........!!
