New data plates/placards
New data plates/placards
Is there a company that makes replacement placards/data plates? I do have my originals and intend to keep them but they are pretty corroded. I'd also like to replace the cockpit placards etc. I know there are companies that will do custom plates, but wonder if anyone had already found a place that can reproduce the original layout and artwork precisely.
Re: New data plates/placards
Peter,
We see them on Ebay from time to time. Also there is a guy on Ebay that sells them sometimes named Don Jones.
Also you need to be careful of which one you buy.
For a pre-war Aeronca you need one that says "Lunken" on it, but after the flood they moved the factory to Middletown. Planes produced after this time point should have the "Middletown" data tags on them.
That said, I have seen both tags on all airplanes, so they are mixed up across the range. I know of only ONE FAA inspector who has an idea of which tags should be on which airplanes.

Re: New data plates/placards
In the book "Aeronca's Golden Age" by Alan Abel, it states that the plant was moved in 1940 to Middletown. In 1941 the name of the company was changed to "Aeronca Aircraft Corporation". I am in need of a replacement dataplate for my 1941 Aeronca Super Chief which was manufactured in Nov of 1941 and is pre-war. The original dataplate from my airplane, at the bottom states "Aeronca Aircraft Corporation" and the Middletown, Ohio address. There appears to be some conflict between the book and this post. No sure which dataplate is correct for a pre-war 1941 airplane, thanks - Steve

Re: New data plates/placards
Your data plate is probably original--they didn't throw anything away--regardless of where they were--example--look at how many peices of wood have been spliced to make some spars. If you are worried about judging--any real Aeronca judge would know that or should. Either way it will not affect the airplanes performance. A data plate is a data plate.-- you can build an airplane with one.

Re: New data plates/placards
Steve,
I don't think I would sweat it. I'm sure after the flood moved them from Lunkin they didn't throw away the data plates. When they ran out the new plates were changed to Middletown.
I have seen three different data plates, Lunkin and Middletown as the more standard styles. One, that could be wartime production says, Municipal Airport Middletown Ohio.
