Refurbish the data plate?

Refurbish the data plate?
Is it legal to replace a data plate with an exact replica and keep the original some where in the a/c records?

Dan,
It would have been before you posted it. Now, I would have the manufacturer send you one. I believe there is an AC that covers this.

I know a guy here in Corona who restored a Waco. He "restored" the data plate by having the numbers engraved onto a genuine blank Waco data plate. He has been fighting the FAA for over a year and a half and lawyers got involved. He could have been flying the Waco ages ago, but since it does not have the original plate on it, it's not a Waco or even an airplane, I guess, in the FAA's eyes.

Dan,
Have your friend follow the FAR and he should not have any issues. Just for general information, jewelry stores and trophy shops do a very nice job of engraving. I have a friend that has used them before.

I have a "refurbished" plate, and save the original, almost illegable, with my logs, also a Canadian plate. When the plane was brought back from Canada they accepted a silly looking plate in the right rear window that looks like nothing like anyone has seen before but has the correct info on it.
If they are going to send me to jail, let it be for something as silly as the correct info on a replacement exact copy plate.

Why is it that gentlemen who would never even think about swapping, altering, selling, or buying VIN plates from automobiles think nothing about doing the same with data plates from airplanes? jrh
