English Aircraft Dealer

Post by rkittine »

I got a response to my ad looking for EDO 80-1400 Floats with Aeronca Rigging and Fittings from an E-mail address in the U.K. The first E-mail said that he had the floats, rigging and fittings. I then requested a price and condition report. He told me that they were in perfect condition and that he could UPS  them to me if I would wire him $380.00  for them. I then asked how big the UPS box would be and what it would weight and was told that it weighted 112 pounds and was not that big. Either this is the same guy or the Brits love to try to scam Aeronca owners.

A bit of a generalization, old chap, don't you think? Some people might take offense at such.

Very true Peter - Meant it in jest, but when I re-read it, I agree with you. Thanks for setting me straight.

Hope that all the Britts on the site forgive my transgression. I was not meant as a slight.

Problem is that this is not a Brit but he is faking being a Brit. I can say about 1000% that its a Nigerian based out of an internet cafe scamming people.

Yes, unfortunately an awful lot of scams originating in Ghana and Nigeria are worked through Britain. I guess they feel it somehow gives them more of a "feeling" of legitimacy - I mean who in their right mind would send money to Nigeria, right?

Aeroncas are quite popular in Britain and Ireland, being simple and cheap to operate - at $7-10 a gallon of gas - sorry - petrol. I remember my first Aeronca flight in a Champ at the Dublin Gliding club, in Ireland sometime in the distant past.

Peter,

Its not just originating through, the Nigerians are coming to the UK and starting the scam there.

I did a lot of work in Nigeria and flew British Airways from Lagos to London often. Almost every flight they held everyone on the plane in their seats after landing then picked out people to take up the gangway. Seems that they were on a "arrest and detain" list by the police for crimes that they had committed in the UK at a previous time and found on the pax list submitted by the airline.

Sad to see...

Someone just tried to Scam me on Barnstormers. I reported it to the Fraud department and they confirmed it was a scam and apparently out of Nigeria, though it was routed through a U.S. E-mail address out of Texas. My additional apologies to the residents of the U.K.

I think it's fair to say genuine Aeronca owners over here are as appalled as everyone else.

It's be relatively rare (albeit not impossible) for us to have what you guys need, given the numbers each side of the pond. In fact, the Aeronca Club would be a good place to check if you are worried about anyone purporting to sell parts. Most UK Aeronca owners are known or at least checkable...
It won't answer everything but might help a little.

And genuine Aeroncaists are charming, honest, upright, utterly lovable people....are we not?
Life is short, but I still fly slow
