Not only was Nellie a CFI but also an A&P and IA. In fact she is enshrined in the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame in Greenfield as the first woman IA in the state of Iowa. She was also a shrewd card player with an infectious laugh. I do miss those two.

Larry,
Did you ever know Hazel Sig (Sigafoose)?

I had met Hazel and her husband (and for the life of me I can't remember his name right now) on a few occasions but I didn't know them well. They would fly down to Sigourney once in a while.

Larry,
Hazel's husbands name was Maxi Hester, unfortunately now deceased. Really nice people. I know Hazel is getting pretty long in the tooth, but I cannot help but wonder about her.... I met the both of them at Sun N Fun, a long time ago. Both of them were just marvelous folks, one could not help but like them.
Decades before I met Hazel in person, I recovered my Clip Wing Cub. I wrote Hazel about the color scheme on her Clipped Cub, and she sent me a large folder full of photos, and other information to include a autographed photo of her in front of her Cub. I miss Hazel at the flying events.

Mike;

I was thinking of her previous husband and I did remember his name. It was Glen Sigafoose. I think he was killed in some kind of an airshow accident.

Badger Bob, I remember sitting on my dad's shoulders in the late forty's at an airshow at the old Eno airport. I may even be in the picture that shows a crowd on the west side of the airport viewing some flying activity. A local Ft Dodge college history instructor sent me several pictures of the old airport and I forward them for loading into the site: abandonedairfields.com. Send me your email and I will forward them to you. There is a shot of 4 new polished aluminum Bonanza's and miscellaneous champs, cubs, ercoupes in the photos. If you or your friends have any pictures or comments please forward them to the person that owns the site so they can be saved. Where are you going to be keeping your new champ. Will run down in the RV. Larry, I will copy the postcard and forward it to the address that comes up under your champ N number if its a current address. I remember my uncle up at Pocahantas saying a used aircraft salesman located near Iowa City would come up and land at his farm and try to get him to upgrade from his champ to a newer plane. Wonder if it could have been Glen.........Gordy

Hazel's first husband, Glen, was killed in an airshow accident. Apparently, a small miscalculation put his Pitts into a unintended spin, which, at very low altitude, was unrecoverable. Terrible loss.

Gordy,

Small world! My Father grew up in the Ft. Dodge and Manson areas then moved to the Shenandoah area during the 1930's when he was with the CCC. Ended up working for Mount Arbor Nurseries there for almost 50 years when I took over his position.

He is the one who got me started flying and before he passed he gave me his logbook. Have tracked down several of the planes he flew and some of them are still flying today. Unfortunately they are all J-2's and J-3's, no Aeronca's.

The champ we picked up out in Nebraska back in Jan. was sold by Nellie and Ruby back in the early 70's and belonged to a fella from Sigourney. The FBO where I work part time when I'm not in school at OOA has Hazel's Spacewalker that she gave the owner.

Joe, my grandparents lived in Manson in the thirties, forties and fifties (Fred Swanson and August Westphal) and when we were kids we went to their houses everyother weekend from Ft Dodge. Now we just get down there to visit cemetary's, funerals and a ocassional reunion picknik. When I was learning in a J-3 in the late fifties Manson had a farm airport on the SW corner of town with 3 or 4 planes and another one on the east side going toward Ft Dodge. Everything is gone now with Rockwell City or Pocahantas being nearest for 65 hp crowd. Enjoy those old days when everything was about under 100 hp. ............ Gordy
