iPad 2 kneeboard
I could not resist and bought an iPad 2 mainly to use in my Skylane. With a Foreflight Mobile subscription, I get current sectionals, IFR enroute charts and approach plates, along with weather, flight planning, etc. for only $75 per year. So, now that I have convinced myself that I purchased the darn thing to save money and keep me safe, how do I use it in a Champ? I've been looking for a pilot kneeboard so I can strap the iPad 2 to my right knee, but the kneeboards I have found also have a cover, writing pad, clipboard (you name it) that opens up and lies on my left knee so I won't be able to pull the stick all the way back. Anybody know of an iPad 2 kneeboard without that problem, please let me know.
BTW, I thought about a RAM mount and that may ultimately be the way to go in the Champ.

I also just bought an iPad and use ForeFlight, to use in my Mooney. In my Champ, I stick with that great invention that does not even needs batteries: a Sectional. And when things get tough then IFR (I Follow Roads).

Re: iPad 2 kneeboard
I found one kneeboard that may work. It is called the "MyClip Thigh" by TIET. The website features a couple of videos showing the ipad on a clipboard during aerobatics. http://www.tietco.com/kneeboard.html
I need to get one, but would like some feedback from a pilot who actually tested it and likes it.

We use one in the jet and love it. Cannot wait for the clones to come out so that prices are more reasonable.

I use Ram mounts for my GPS / Radio and iPhone with the Aviation Aps in my Champ. I would have tried the iPad in the plane, but for my panel it was too big. I also use Ram mounts in my Ham Radio station, my motorcycle, bike and boat. Love Em.

I opted to purchase the "MyClip Thign." After I try it, I'll let you know if I like it.

Re: iPad 2 kneeboard
The MyClip kneeboard arrived and I tried it. Well, not in my Champ because it is still in pieces in northern Illinois, but in my Skylane. It works. I attached my iPad 2 to the kneeboard, wrapped the strap around my right thigh and played with it for quite some time. It was stable and held the iPad nicely. I think I'll like it in the Champ where I plan to use only the Ipad and not any paper charts.

Dick,
I don't know your household situation but, the lady in my house sewed a couple of pieces of
ordinary elastic to a Velcro fastener which I slip thru the Targus case for my Ipad2 and then
hook the Velcro fastener around my leg. Works fine for me. If you don't have a lady in your house, maybe you have a daughter nearby ? My setup took about 30-40 minutes including a fitting session to get the tension around my thigh correct

This is a photo of the Ipad in my Champ. It is mounted with RAM hardware. As we discussed at Middletown, there is limited space for putting an Ipad in a Champ but this works for me. I have the Dual bluetooth gps that works good. I also have a WiFi hub that I put on the dash, which allows me to download weather radar in flight on Foreflight. This was a welcome aid during the return flight from Middletown to dodge the storms and rain.
I have a question for those who use a knee-pad Ipad mount. Do you attach it to your left or right leg? I would prefer the right leg but this seems to interfere with my normal flying style of resting my right arm on my leg while gripping the stick.
One observation related to using an Ipad with Foreflight in a plane. I would recommend "Locking" the screen alignment so that it does not change from landscape to portrait as the Ipad is rotated. I found that the vibration of the Ipad in the RAM mount resulted in the screen alignment flipping back and forth when the alignment was not locked.

John,
I use my IPad2 on my right thigh in a "landscape" position with the display switch locked. There don't seem to be interference problems although the layout may be different in a Champ. Don't yet have a lot of XC time with this setup. Will update this as I get more in.
