Continental O-200 conversion

Post by Mike Worthen »

Anyone have knowledge/experience with the Continental O-200 conversion in the Champ? How much added weight/ CG changes/etc? Is this conversion considered uncool by true Champ fans? Thanks for anybody's input.

Mike,
I just finished the Wagner 0200 conversion on my L16 which is basically a Champ of sort. The Wagner STC brings it up to a 7CCM and 1300# gross. It also allows you to build your own mount if you want. I opted to keep my short mount which puts the mags pretty close to the fire wall. The STC is pretty convoluted but seems to allow quite a bit of 'latitude' . I also installed a Sky-tec starter and battery combination so that adds quite a bit of weight but not as much as the old heavy starter/battery on the -12 engines. Also requires extra fuel tankage and mufflers so it all adds up. Don Sword has a 0200 conversion that basically comes in as a "super 85' which eliminates the additional spar inspection every year (but the spar is supposed to be inspected on the annual inspection anyway). I will say this, the 0200 really performs even with the shorter 69 inch prop.
I suppose some purists would say it's 'uncool' to reengine with the 0200 but I couldn't find a C85 so did the next best thing ( I think). It would have been less trouble and headaches.

Don Sword talked me out of installing an 0-200 rather than rebuilding my C-90 for my Champ. He said that the C-90 has 105 pounds more torque than the 0-200 and develops more continuous horsepower than the normal high cruise setting on the 0-200 as the 0-200 only develops the 100 HP at high RPM and has a limited number of approved props. In addition, the other gentlemen also posinted out the 100 HP AD that requires the addition of top of wind inspection ports for the spars rather than the normal annaul spar inspection that I do with a Proctascope. (got it from a local hospital that went bankrupt! Don did the 0-200 parts conversion on my C-85-12 in the Chief and that engine was super.
