Pre-War Chief On EDO 60-1320 Floats

Post by rkittine »

Hi All,

Anyone have any experience with a Pre-War Chief on EDO 1320 Floats? How much room inside compared to a Post War CHief? Performance? Could I get two 185 pounders and fuel for 1.5 hours, in the air? Will it perform at all with a 65 HP? 75? I have lots of time in a Post War Chief with 1400s, but have never seen a pre war in person.

Thanks - Robert

Robert -- I don't think you want to put floats on a 65 HP (!)

It barely enjoys getting airborne with 6x6 tires on a warm day....

My first 9 hours were in a SCA with a C-85. The 50, 65-SC, 50,65 & 95-SLA have a gross weight of 1250#, The 65-SCA & SLB have a gross weight of 1350#. The will out perform the post war with equal HP.

Irving Woodhams used the Pre-war for training in the CPT program in WWII, He didn't care for the post-war to much.

If I remember correctly the Lycoming powered Chiefs were not certified for floats but a field approval should not be a problem.

Thanks Dan - I will be looking at two 65-CAs with C-85s, one a -8 and one a -12 with the accessory case closed off and no starter, which is fine for me. I see that according to the A-675 Type Certificate, if I add EDO 1320s I get a max gross weight increase to 1320. I did talk to two people who have Pre-War Chiefs and it sounds like it will not be any tighter inside than my Post War Chief.

Robert

Your right 1320# gross.

If you can check the 337 for the engine upgrade the one 85-12 was more than likely done by Irv or based on his 337.

The secret to the performance in Irv's Chief's is He kept them light. If it didn't have to be there is wasn't. No award winning paint job. Check the firewall and see if the removed the bump for the yoke.

I think you will find that they will out perform the Post-war

where are the located? Irv was from Kalamazoo and wintered Flordia.

Just to be clear here Dan, you are talking about 65 Lycoming horsepower, right.

The reason I bought my 65C Pre-war (Continental horsepower) was because I had an AA1 Grumman Yankee for 10 years and wanted something better for shorter grass strips. On the test flight in the Chief with two big guys, I think I already bought the plane at the instant I saw we already had a couple hundred feet altitude halfway down the 2000' back runway, in the summer, and with 700x6s!!

Wow -- that's significant performance? I assume it has a climb prop?

My Lycoming prefers cool air or decent headwinds.

Hi Dan,

I live on the Eastern End of Long Island and in New York City and keep aircraft at East Hampton Airport and Wariwck.

The 65-CAs I will be looking at both have C-85s installed in them.

I have a 50-L with a 65 lycoming. the only thing to compare it with on the airport are a Cub and a 7-AC. It is faster than the cub with a A-65 but has not been flying since the 7-AC has been here.

I hope to have the rebuild done this year. Then I will be able to compare the performance. Then I can finish the 65-LB installing sticks an a C-85 with the O-200 upgrades.

The Chief has a C-85-12 with the 0-200 Parts upgrade and VGs. It does a great job on 1400s.
