Gas (Fuel) Valve Control Rod 1941 Super Chief

Post by skookum »

I am interested in obtaining an original fuel control rod, or knowing what they looked like. My plane came with a toggled up arrangement - homemade from a fuel valve which turned 90 degrees (I think it was a brass fuel/kerosene shutoff valve found on potbelly stoves). I am not sure if the existing fuel control rod is the original as it does not appear to be something that would be conducive to pulling and pushing.

I have purchased a new (STC) fuel valve from Burl's in Alaska to replace the leaky old twist valve and now must find a suitable fuel shutoff rod with knob to install with the new valve. Hopefully, it should be adjustable for length and correct for installation.

I have looked at the DVD Aeronca Drawings Disk and have not found drawings # 2-226 or 2-231 which are associated with the fuel rod for the 65 CA engine and the Chief/Superchief model.

Anyone have what is known to be in the Aeronca Superchief 1941 era, or have any photos of the correct install?

Thank you for any help.

You're probably going to check with Burl for any of the attaching parts. Or you'll need to whip something up yourself.
Using replacement parts that aren't exact are always troublesome.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe the fuel on off valve is not push pull, but a 90 degree turn valve, or barrel valve if you please.

Dave,
My 1938 uses a through the dash rod that turns left and right. The 11AC has a push pull arrangement.

My 1941 has the 90 degree turn style valve and from reading some of your comments, maybe it is original, but it still leaks and does anyone have any pictures or can they take some pictures of their dash showing the gas valve and send them to me?

My email address is: dring@shiretownengineering.com

My plane can be viewed at this link:

The dash and the gas valve can be viewed by clicking on this link:

The gas valve (leaky) which appears somewhat fuzzy in the picture can be seen on this link:

The dash mount gas handle seen again at:

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Dave,
Try some EZ Turn fuel lube when you assemble. Also some of the early valves had a little seal washer for the stem seal, the later used an O ring. My set-up looks like this one, http://eaach1.org/Projpics/kcawheel.jpg.

I have sent you an emails showing my forward tank valve and the rod extension from the valve to the handle on the lower dash. It is a 90 degree on off valve. You can very easily take the valve apart, reseat it with a little valve grinding compound, put it back together and most likely beat the leak.
