I have a couple of pairs of Shinn wheels that came with this project and also a pair of Cleveland wheels (drum brakes). The Clevelands have a small pulley over which the brake wire runs to the brake lever arm.
The bolt pattern of the backplate does not allow these to be fitted, so I am wondering if they were from some other airplane. However the parts catalog shows "Van Sickle" Wheels and brakes which look identical, with the same pulley the Shinns don't have.
Does anyone have pictures of brakes other than the Shinn and how they are installed? The Clevelands look a little more substantial, but I have no experience with either.
Should I just stick with the Shinns?

The Shinn, VanSickle,and Firestone all were the same wheel and brake. Some hade a different brake band width, just make sure the lining and anvil are a match. Most of these wheels were on the tapered axles. The straight axle used a Cleveland set up but not the DMD that the Champ used. The brake shoes are completly different, more automotive, and did not have an aluminum casting for the shoe piece.
I would stick with the Shinn. The're a good brake, but, like any mechanical brake they need constant adjustment.

It picture in the catalog looks exactly like the Cleveland wheel and brakes I also have. But I cannot see how you could orient the pulley so it could line up with the stock location of an L3B's brake cable.

That's the Cleveland stuff, possibly made by VanSickle. Use the best set you have, you can't gets parts for either one. The one pictured is for the straight axle.

I actually acquired a set of these L3B brakes in good shape if you need a spare set, I'd sell them for a fair price to recoup what I paid to get another set working on my Chief. The only issue I have is 1 of the backplates (torque plates) has been poorly repaired. But if you are just looking for spares... Also have the "MBA" wheels that go with this. 3 good wheel halves and 2 good drums. The drums also fit the DBA wheels. The 4th wheel half has 3/4 of the bearing stop ring (?) missing, but this is probably an easy repair for a welder, and the wheel itself is good.
Or.. if you decided not to use your set, then maybe I could pickup the torque plate and an MBA outer wheel half if you have them? Then I'd have a backup set...

I already sold them to somebody who had a better use for them than I did. I'll see how my Shinn wheels work out. I have a spare one for those, so that swayed my decision.
