Champ for sale

Post by MikeB »

I'm considering selling my 1946 7AC Champ (65 horse). It's been stored in my shop at home with the wings and tail feathers off since I put my L16 together. As I only have one hangar and can only fly one plane at a time I guess something has to give. It was flying fine when I filed it away about a year ago. The airframe logs go back to the factory and even have the original bill of sale. The engine log starts when the engine was rebuilt in 1999 has around 300 hours since but I've replaced a couple of cylinders in that time. Right now I have the engine pickled but can be ran, compression checked, etc. Four new lift struts and links in 2001, new Slick mags, Oleo gear was overhauled by Safe Air. I want to sell the plane 'as is' with the wings and tail feathers off (you haul it away) but prefer the prospective buyer bring his mechanic along to do the inspection in my shop. I have everything needed, timing, compression tester and a scope to look into the wings as necessary. The fabric is Superflite 2 installed in about 2000 with the exception of the wings which were covered with Blue river 7700 process in about 1990. If I kept the plane I was going to recover the wings as they were done before I bought the plane in the late 1990's although they still Maule test fine as far as I know. If you're interested I can fill you in on the details.
This has been my 'baby' since I sold my Cherokee. Even flew it to Oshkosh but at this point it's just taking up space and probably needs a new home and hopefully someone who likes it as much as I did. Price is $18,500 firm. Drop me a PM if interested. Forgot to mention: skis don't go with it.

Keith - thanks for keeping an eye out for me.

The 65 is a little light on HP for me. I'm going to hold out for an 85 or 90 to get my big butt up. I REALLY like the skis though!!!!!

65 can get you 90% of the places an 85/90 can go. Flew mine for 10 years before upgrading the motor. You may not be able to carry full tanks, 2-up and 50lbs of gear, but that's what buddy's with Supercubs are for.

At $18,5 this is a steal!

Mike, hate to see you sell it, but understand. Hopefully it'll go to a good home.

We have three Champs with A65's on our field along with two L16's (one with an 85-12 and mine with the 0200). No doubt the various 0200 conversions available will do things the 65's can't performancewise but I've been satisified with the performance of the 65's overall. Mostly I wanted a starter rather than having to swing the prop to start (old age = bad rotator cuff :( ). The A65 will run all day on 4 1/2 gallons per hour. I think the 85's are somewhere around 5 or so. I don't have alot of time on the L16/0200 but I'm sure it's on the plus side of 6. I need to take a couple of longer trips to find out the fuel burn for sure. Leaning seems to make a big difference. As noted in my post above, I replaced a couple of cylinders on the A65 in the past ten years but it had nothing to do with the basic engine itself. We had one A65 on the field that went about 1850 hours before overhaul. I think in that time one cylinder was pulled for a leaking valve and that plane spent a lot of time going up and down and up and down.

Just finished the first annual on my L16/0200 yesterday with no discrepancies but only had 35 hours in the past year too. I need to fly more but being gone for half the winter doesn't help either.

Think I might have someone coming to look at the Champ this weekend. Also someone from the flying club asked about it too. Hope she goes to a good home.

Is this Champ still for sale? If so, where are you located?

Thanks

Hi Kurt,
Still have it. It's resting in my shop at home and I pet it every day  . I don't really need to sell it (wife says to keep it) but on the other hand don't know why I'm keeping it either as it's taking up space in the shop that I should be using for something else and I have the L16 to fly. As I mentioned above I have it stored with the wings and tail feathers off and that's the way I want to sell it. I live about 10 miles south of Eau Claire. Let me know by PM if you're interested and I can fill in the rest of the details.

Champ sold! Friend of mine from the flying club stopped today to look at the Champ and sounds like he'll take it. I wanted it to go to a good home and I know he'll take good care of it although he's planning on storing it in his shop until he retires in a year so the wings stay off for now. I spent several hundred hours flying the Champ after I restored it about 12 years ago and enjoyed every minute of it. It was one nice flying bird.
