COPPER FUEL LINE FERREL

Post by DELCOM »

Hi Everyone

I was wanting to replace the copper fuel line between the tank valve and the gascolator. The gascolator end is simply flared so it is no problem, but the fuel valve to copper line has a compression fitting that requires a 3/8" ferrel that appears to be different than the conventional ferrel. It appears that it is NOT tapered on both sides of the ferrel as one would normally see. This one appears to have one tapered side and one flat side.......special?
Has anyone come across this before and what did you do?

I feel the need to make sure I get this right as fuel will leak onto my legs if I do not.

Thanks

Del

Del,
Seems to me that the upper ferrel (or sleeve) is similiar to an older style gas or propane fitting. I pondered on mine and thought about making a new line but couldn't come up with the correct sleeve (although I didn't try too hard) and wound up making the old one work. I've seen a couple of applications in Champs where they had a flexible line between the fuel valve and the gascolator fitting but I'm unsure if they didn't simply cut the line below the sleeve and then sweat a new fitting on the line and attach the flexible line. This assumes the joint between the ferrel and the shut off valve is good.

I'm probably not much help so someone else could chime in with a better answer.

Dell,
I believe it's called a "break away " nut. Any good brass fittings shop should have them.
