Aeroshell 15W50 Shelf Life

Howdy all,

I'm anticipating putting my 90 horse Champ on skis this winter and obviously won't be able to use W100 like I do in the summer. I have a case of 10 year old 15W50 under the bench and am wondering if it's still any good? Obviously at the very least it'll need a good shaking.

In a nutshell----4 years that can be extended 2years with a retest.

Having said that, I know shops that are using oil from a 55 gal drum that is more than 4years old.

We've run oil that was 5 years old and didn't have any issue. I also bought the last of the W65 from ACSpruce and the date stamp was 3 years old, and had no issue.

Having said that, oil does break down over time, more quickly if exposed to air. If the price was right, I would probably run 10 year old oil, but not push the run cycle; 25hrs max then change it. It might be hard to notice, but if you see a different trend in oil temp/pressure while using the old stuff, you may want to get some new in there.

CamGuard or AvBlend is probably a good idea as well; assuming you're running a Lyc.

I recall when I was in Ardmore Oklahoma My Champ was hangered at Ardmore Downtown, in the back room unheated was cases of Aeroshell non detergent 50 wt oil, needed a plues oil can opener, this stuff was so old the oil was leaking thru the paper containers with the metal top and bottom. Take all you want! What a deal my A-65-8 Oil was really dirty I used that oil for 4 years, and never experienced a problem. Back in the day, 1974ish I,owned a Stinson 108 franklin engine, the FBO changed hands and gave me 10 cases that was left. I used that in my Franklin 150 for 8 years no dates on the oil that I could determine but it was probably 20 years old. I did use a paint strainer when I poured it in the engine, and would pick up some non metallic black spots in the filter. Kinda like sludge. Really black. Any way I pay $85.00 for 12 quarts now, wish I had that Old nasty paper can stuff, eventually I had to use a kitchen can opener to open the paper cans if you tried to use the Plues it crushed the paper cylinder,no Filter on both those engines changed oil every 20 hours.
