Nathan's post gives some great insight. For the last few engines done at our field we've pulled the engine, taken off the accessories like the mags, carb, baffles, etc. removed the cylinders but left the rods intact on the crank and sent the engine to Bolduc in the Twin Cites to rebuild the bottom end and install, crank, cam, oil pump, accessory case, rods (with new bolts, nuts), etc. We have our IA install new (or recon) cylinders and whatever else he feels is necessary. We install the baffling and the engine, exhaust, etc. and he inspects the work and signs it off. There are several of us on the field who are professional mechanics (diesel and/or heavy equipment/auto) so we probably tend to look at everything with a critical eye as things are going together anyway.

I have a bunch of A65 parts that I'm sitting on for some reason. As far as I know they're all servicable or at least rebuildable but I've apparently got too many irons in the fire to get them inspected and or reconditioned.

My 0200 rebuild went something like this: (off the top of my head)
$1000 core engine
$3800 new ECI nickle cylinders
$4995 rebuild bottom end of the engine with new bearings: case, crank, cam, lifters, oil pump, gears, etc
were Ok. Rods reconditioned, rockers bushed, metal parts inspected, cam gear replaced. Bolduc
All I did was drop it off and pick it up assembled.
$700 Rebuilt carbureator exchange. The old one had a pile of service letters and AD's on it.
$1800 New Slick mag kit with plugs and wires. I had the gears.
$220 Oil filter and adapter kit.
$12,515 Total.
I also paid my IA to come to my shop to install the cylinder kits probably another $100. I felt the $4995 paid to Bolduc was also money well spent for the peace of mind as they have the shop and equipment needed and so far everything we've had them do has worked out.

Doc: I'm going to be in San Antonio shortly for a couple of months. Maybe we can get together sometime.

As I see it, the big issue coming up in the 65 hp world is availability of cylinders and good Accy cases.

Sure wish that someone would start making new cylinders again for the 65 hp engine.

Joe,
According to a recent ad in TAP it appears that Superior is making the A65 cylinder kits again although I haven't looked any further to see if they're actually available. We'll be on our way to Texas in a couple of weeks and I may drop my A65 cranks, blocks and cams off in Tulsa to get them rebuilt and certified. I no longer need them but someone else might in the future. I have a couple of accessory (oil pump) cases that look serviceable or at least rebuildable. I had Bolduc do the bushing mod when I had my A65 Champ and that seemed to work out well. While it was pricey (around $400 to get the case redone, gears, etc.) it didn't drop the prime if it sat for longer than a day or two. Never did improve the oil pressure though. It always ran a constant 28 psi if the temperature was up.

Mike,

Sure hope that this is correct as this is the one weak point that I see with the 65 hp engines right now.

Thanks and happy New Year!

Here's a link for whatever it's worth and they do list the A65 "mod kit".

About the same thing going on here Mike. Been waiting for 2-3 months for the guy helping me make the updated "Sedan landing gear Bungee tool" (old friend of mine here locally who is slower than molasses in winter) and hoping that we can finish said tool today but would not put much $$ on it.

Enjoy the game!

A little off topic buuuuut.............Just got up and It's foggy and misting here. Just turned the hanger heater on. Hope to finish up the handlebar installation on my Harley then it's black eye peas, cornbread and hog jowl for dinner.

Happy New Year from Arkansas to my Aeronca friends.
