Hi All,
I am in the process of replacing my brake shoes, (1946, 7AC, Cleveland Mechanical Shoe Brakes) The lower end of each shoe has a bushed hole through which a bolt passes. As removed 3 of these bushes were a floating fit, 1 a press fit. Inspection of the set up here leaves me to believe that the floating fit is correct, i.e. the bush is clamped between the boss on the backplate and the "two hole" washer in front, leaving the shoe free to move both around and along the bush. (Not much movement but enough to allow it all to work).
Am I correct or have I missed something?
Thanks,
Joe Platt

Re: Cleveland Mechanical Brake Shoes
Hi again,
Having slept on this I think a better course would be to fit oversize bushes (a press fit) and tighten the retaining nuts only finger tight, with a cotter pin of course, so allowing the shoe and bush to move around the retaining bolt.
So.... now where do I get oversize bushing material?
Regards,
Joe

As far as I remember, the 2 bolts have castle nuts on the ends with cotter pins, so no, they wouldn't be torqued all the way, just enough to still allow rotation of the shoes.
I don't know if Wag Aero or Univar carries those parts. Maybe a friend with a lathe could make a set, or a regular old machine shop could make some.

I have some new shoes with a weird end at the cam, so I couldn't use them. However, the bushings are definitely pressed in place.
