Champ wing weight

Post by williamc »

I have an old back injury that needs pampering and I need to know the approx weight of a covered and painted champ wing. Thanks for your help.

Bill,

I have just finished covering both of my wings and unfortunately moved the scales to a different location. I'd venture a guess somewhere around 50 to 60 lbs. I can easily pick up the tip end and rotate one in the jig.

Thanks Richard,
I'll figure about 60 until I can get my son to weigh one.

If I move the wings to Celina I will weigh each and get an accurate number. If you haven't seen the post about a fellow looking to make an offer on an L-16 on this forum, he could benefit from your knowledge.

Hi Richard,
I saw the post about the L-16B. I don't think I can be much help unless he provides more information. If he posts some more details, i'll see if I can help.

you got two bathroom scales? A man on each scale holding each end of the wing. Substract the weight of each man and sum the two numbers. I figured you knew that already but I thought I would throw it out there just in case.

Dennis,

You are correct, that will indeed give you the weight. I am fortunate to have three certified scales we use to weigh aircraft with. Had the same procedure without the second man needed. They are the large steel scales with four wheels and it takes a bit to move them.

Richard,

The next best thing to owning certified scales is to have a friend who owns them. :-)

A thought to ponder: we diligently get the empty weight of our aircraft with " certified" scales. Then the owner will load the plane based on bathroom scale weights (at best) of pilot and passengers and the baggage is estimated at best. Not to mention estimating the weight of fuel when less than full.
